My cigars are trippin'

Very strange thing happened with some of my smokes. A while back I purchased a couple boxes of El Mejor's; very good bargain smoke. Within the first month of receiving them, I smoked probably 10 or so and really liked them for a change of pace (for those times that I didn't want to smoke a premium).

Something strange happened with them lately. Last Thursday evening I grabbed one and began smoking it to find a much different taste. No longer was I getting that chocolate semi-sweet flavor, it was gone. I kept smoking it to only find the flavor to turn into one that was very unpleasant. In an effort to experiment, I tossed it and grabbed another but the same harsh taste. I chalked it up to an evening where my taste buds must have been off.

However this evening, I grabbed another and same thing happened. I decided to do the same thing as the other evening and lit up another but it was the same foul taste. It was probably the worst taste I've ever experienced while smoking a cigar. All of the pleasant flavors that I enjoyed before were completely gone and were replaced with a very strong and harsh acidic after taste.

I'm at a loss here in understanding what happened. Everything has been good with my humi and all of my other smokes have been fine. Anyone ever experience something like this? I was trying to age these a bit but it seems that a couple of months only turned them into harsh acid tasting dog rockets. I still have about a box left, therefore I'm tempted to try more but good lord, the taste is terrible. :(

Not yet since I stick with smokes I know. So with that said, I've never even heard of these cigars. Makes me what whats the story behind them and even want to try one. Just to see what you are referring too.

They're not well known and certainly aren't great cigars. However, at about 2 bucks a pop, they were quite tasty for a change of pace (that is, when they didn't start tasting acidic)

This happened to Double D and his Masadas, however they went from being spicy to bland, Still smokable but there is a noticable change in taste.

I have noticed that this can happen to smokes, namely bundles of Coney's, everynow and then. When you un-celly the sticks it helps them to mix and mellow a little more since they can get to the air. Everynow and then they "mellow" a little much and loose the sweet coco oil and gain an airy charred coffee flavor. Just make sure the humi is doing ok and don't worry to much.

I can't say this is the real reason, but it just seems to be my observation.

Nah, we're talking about a fairly strong acidic aftertaste. It's not just about becoming bland or losing some of the chocolate semi-sweet flavor. Also, the humi is fine, it's just these sticks.

I'm just a little bummed because I liked these cigars and I have so many that I'll probably end up tossing (over a box worth). At least this problem is only happening with them - oh well, never again El Mejor!

Could is possibly be like the PSD4's??? Where they are great young but then need some time after that to get their taste back? I know this is a different cigar, but is the only thing I could think of since your humi and everything are fine.

Hmmm... interesting hypothesis. It's hard to fathom that the taste will ever come back after smoking the last four (they were just flat out bad and no flavor whatsoever). However, I've got nothing to lose by just letting them sit and trying them a couple months down the road. I'll give that a go (I was about ready to just toss 'em all) ;)

What do you expect from a 2 dollar cigar? It probably went into it's sick period where it will probably stay forever. LOL

You want a good cheap cigar for under 3 bucks, then stick to regular line Padrons.Nothing beats them in that price range. If you need a good source for them let me know.

I wouldn't expect the cigar a couple months after storing it to turn from an enjoyable smoke to one that is flat out rancid just because it's a $2 cigar. When I started out, all I owned were $2-$4 cigars and I never had anything like this happen before. I can understand had I stored it much longer, but we're talkin' 2 months. Oh well, no biggie ;)

I think I will take you up on your source for Padrons though. I just had my first Fumas the other day and I have to say that for the money, it was pretty darn good.

You must have been drunk when you first tasted these. LOL Cigars don't usually get rancid after only two months.

That's my point and is why I was so surprised by the change in flavor (or lack thereof). As for the drinking, since I don't partake in that activity anymore, that can't be an explanation ;)

i've had the exact experience with another brand, costa rican, which was explained to me as being the 'SICK PERIOD". waited nine month and tried them again, to my surprise they did improve, but not good enough to buy them anymore!

Might be the "sick period"

I agree cigars do turn sick sometimes, even if the are not new. Let them rest another month and try, this should work.
