A friend of mine who's new to the pleasures of Cuban cigars recently asked me for 4 cigars that would be good for a newbie, 3 must try Cubans, and my 2 favorites. Meaning 4 cigars that a newbie would like and is not overpowering and 3 Cuban cigars that a cigar lover should at one time or another try. Here are my picks:

Newbie cigars in order of size:
Juan Lopez Petite Corona - Light bodied, incredibly smooth, lots of cream flavors.
ERDM Choix Supreme - Light to medium bodied, great construction, nutty flavors
HU Mag 46 - Medium bodied, generally good construction, with pronounced coffee flavor, perfect corona gorda that exudes some body, but not overpowering.
HdM DC - IMO the perfect DC that starts you off as a light/medium bodied cigar and builds in flavor and strength and ends as a medium bodied cigar. Flavors of cream and chocolate develop and changes throughout the smoke.

3 Must try Cubans:
Cohiba Esplendido - the one that everyone talks about and the most counterfeited cigar in the world.
RyJ Churchill - named after Sir Winston
Montecristo "A" - for those days when you have 3 hours to spare

My 2 Favorites:
Partagas Serie P no. 2 - improving everything that is good about the PSD4
Vegas Robaina Unicos - the cigar that made me an island whore

What are yours?

My top 3 (ATM)

Partagas Serie D no. 4 > Partagas Serie P no. 2 IMO

Punch Black Prince

Romeo Y Julieta Exhibicion No.4

Uhh... cubans are illegal! :0

how about a SLR Serie A? or maybe a CoRo? Then there's a RASS... nothing overpowering, and nice flavors...

Right now my 2 favs are:

Sancho Panzo Belicosos 02
RA Gigantes 03

By next week i'll have a few more Favs, but both are amazing good with such young age.

I would have to go with the RASCC... Just a fine little smoke :)

I'd recommend Juan Lopez 2, Trinidad colonial, and Upmann mag 46 to start with..must try Cohiba siglo vi and Partagas lusitania and Bolivar BF..my fave Trinidad robusto extra and siglo vi.

Monte A was ok IMHO. It didnt hit the spot but at least I smoked one. I like the Party Serie D #4. good smoke. Several #2 by RyJ, H Upmann, Bolivar is a good stand by.

SLR Serie A
Rafael Gonzales Coronas Extra
San Cristobal de la Habana La Fuerza

I prefer '03 & '04 box codes ;)

Great idea for a thread!

Although a newbie I have expereinced some ISOM's that to me were the truest pleasure of cigar enjoyment.

My Favs:
Trinidad –Robusto Extras(fav)
Ramon Allones- Robusto, SS

Newbie must haves:
Quai D’Orsay- Any
Monte's- #2 & Edmundo
San Cristobal de La Habana - Any
Juan Lopez - Seleccion No. 2/1

MUST HAVES (for me at least):
Cohiba - Any will do
H. Upmann – Connoisseur#1, Magnum 46, #2, Super Corona Finos
Vegas Robaina- Unicos, Famosos, DonAlejandro
Hoyo de Monterrey - Epicure No. 2&1, Petit Robusto
Romeo y Julieta – Belicosos, Exhibicion No. 3&4
Partagas- Serie D#4 & #2, 8-9-8, Coronas
Punch- Super Selection No.2, Royal Selection No.11, Punch-Punch, Black Prince
Cuaba- Any

3 Favorites:

H.Upmann Magnum 46
Cohiba Siglo IV
Trinidad Fundadore

cigars i would recommend to a newby...(not so much as must try but they are outstanding as young smokes)

siglo I and jlo patricias

the cigars i ask for at every lcdh i go into...

partagas shorts...box of 50
bolivar petit coronas...box of 50

derrek :)

Cigars that I would recommend or start someone out on?
Partagas Serie D No. 4
Montecristo No. 4
Sancho Panza Belicoso
All are on the medium side of full (the SP a little milder) and all smoke pretty well when young (thought the Monte might be a bit tannic).

Cigars that I truly love to smoke?
Bolivar CE (98) and I have heard the 01s are fantastic
RA 898 (01) by far my favorite RA
Partagas Serie du Conn. No. 2 (98) just got these...they are incredible

My Favorites:

1. Montecristo #2
2. Cohiba Siglo 2
3. Partagas Serie D #4

Nice mild cigar for Newbie

ERDM Choix Supreme

I'll go with some moderately priced Cubans that I like:

RASS
ERDM Choix Supreme
Punch Punch
Monte #2
PSD#4
Bolivar Belicosos Finos

I didn't consider complexity or the overall strongess of the cigars on my list. A newbie might not want to smoke a RASS or say a Bolivar right away, but these are still must-try's in my book. I might not (yet) be a huge fan of the Monte #2 or the Bolivar, but I still think these are sticks everyone should try. Just my two European cents ???
