Started reading up on pipes recently, and decided to jump in with both feet. After a month or so of reading I hit some online stores and picked up a few things last week, including these:
CAO: Devil's Holiday
Dunhill: Nightcap
McClelland: Christmas Cheer 2006 (x2), Grey Havens, and Frog Morton on the Bayou
Peterson: University Flake
G. L. Pease: Haddo's Delight
Samuel Gawith: 1792 Flake and Grousemoor
Mac Baren: The Cube
I've been smoking out of a beat-up corncob, trying to get some semblance of a technique down, and I've tried everything above but the Christmas Cheer, Grousemoor, and the Peterson's. I've been storing the opened tins in and old humidor that belonged to my Grandfather (it's older than I am!) - he smoked pipes years ago, but my Grandmother made him get rid of all of them a few years after they got married (when I was about a year old) and took my my brother and I in to live with them. He's no longer with us, and I felt that using it for cigars was somehow wrong, so using it the way it once was seems like the right thing to do .
I didn't think the little corncob was going to be good enough to use exclusively, so I also picked a Peterson Ebony Killarney (B11) with a Fishtail bit, and a 100g tin of Mac Baren Vintage Syrian (yummy stuff!)
All in all, I think I did pretty good for a first timer.
