From Johnnie Walker -  Gold Label Reserve is billed as a whisky to be served over ice or in a tall drink with soda water and fruits like grapefruit or lemon.

Now this blend (with no age statement whereas the old Gold label was 18 years, I'm sure they didn't do that on purpose) is based heavily on the Clynelish single malt.  Not even believing somebody would mix scotch and grapefruit juice I sat down and did a little experimenting last night.  My base was a 50/50 mix of soda water and grapefruit juice that I then mixed 1:1 with Clynelish, Black, Green, Gold, and out of sheer curiosity Double Black.

THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL YOU SHOULD TRY THIS AT HOME OR ANYWHERE ELSE.

You've been warned

I always thought scotch and milk was weird. Talk about aghita, but grapefruit juice?

My wife likes scotch, kahlua, and milk. But, I've convinced her to not waste good scotch for her brew. Some like scotch and ginger. I like the taste of scotch, just the way it is.

Scotch and ginger isn't bad, but I wouldn't do it with anything over 12 years old. Grapefruit? Meh.

It is a shame that JW is moving into the label markeing side if the buisness instead of maintaining quality.

No more green label. No more 18 gold label and I bet the new platinum gives a worst drinking experience that the late GL.

The only one I still buy is the red labal and it is to mix with coke. (we dont have the double black here)

I was reaching for the Brioschi just reading Ray's description.

Wow...while I appreciate the warning I am not sure that is was needed.  Common sense would stand as enough of a warning on this one!!!

Well, there sure isn't an abundance of that going around these days  ;)

Best to post the warning Stu....

I've had the Gold Label Reserve.  A big mistake was drinking it expecting it to be even remotely on the level of the 18 year Gold.  It isn't even close.  I'd mix it with anything to mask the taste.

The only thing I ever mix Scotch with---and only for the holidays at that---is Barenjager, a German honey liqueur.  Kind of like a Rusty Nail.

Grapefruit juice? Sheeeeesh. Can't believe you were curious enough to actually try it, lol.  But hey, thanks for taking one for the team!  :p

This type of thing is right up Diageo and JW's Marketing alley.  With Cherry, Honey and god knows what else flavored spirits I was wondering where the market would go next.  Given recent trends I don't know how but, it appears there is a market for this stuff.  I can tell you it certainly isn't anything I would shell out for but, this is viewed internally as a way to get non whisk(e)y drinkers putting dollars in their pocket.  Throw a "Gold Label Reserve" tag on it mark it up put some fancy advertising programs with south beach models drinking their super special "Gold Reserve" watered down with grapefruit and soda and watch the $ roll in.

Hey, if you like it drink it, if not let your wallet be your voice.  As long as they are not allocating the "good stuff" and it doesn't drive up the price of my favorites let the lemmings have their Grapefruit and JW.  :-)  I will say though that outside of my consistent handle of JW black.  I haven't been running out to buy any of their products including gold and blue.  Many other products I would rather spend my money on.

I had to laugh.....I remember one time oldest son thought he'd make himself a cocktail....and put a splash of JW Black in some Coke.  Didn't turn out like he thought it would.....

This sounds just as tasty....I'll pass, but thanks for the heads up, Ray.  Save the grapefruit juice for the less expensive gin....now, that's good on a hot day...!!

Good thing I don't have a taste for scotch, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway.

If you don't like booze the way it tastes out of the bottle, you're drinking for the wrong reasons.

My grandfather gave me an old bar tending book, and it's got a recipe for something called "Scotch Punch." A mix of scotch and brandy and a couple other things that needs to sit for a couple weeks, as per the recipe, but that's pretty good. Every year around Christmas my Father-in-law gets a bottle of JW Red from someone. He doesn't drink, so he gives it to me. I use that in the mix. I'll post up the recipe tonight for anyone who is interested.
