Didn't want to hijack the other thread......

Was asked an interesting question yesterday about conditioning KL by placing them in a tupperware container with heartfelt beads. At first my reaction was that it wouldn't work and figured the KL would suck out the rh so fast that the HFB's would constantly be below its point of releasing moisture. Figured the HFB's might well be reconditioned themselves to a lower rh.
After thinking about it I became intrigued by the possibility.

I've since changed my mine and think its possible. The amounts of HFB's and KLH used would be a consideration as well as having to consistently recharge the HFB's. I would try it on a small scale first..... say maybe 1lb of HFB's to 1/2 lb KLH. The HFB's would have to be constantly monitored and kept recharged. Prob a very light misting every other day in the beginning but would have to be a judgement call as to how much and how often to recharge.

IMO, in order for it to work you have to keep the HFB's charged...... not over saturated nor under. They have to be kept in their regulating zone. Obvious this would be a more hands on project and quite a bit of decision making done on judgement calls but does seem doable. Thoughts?

Sounds like it would work as long as the person doing it was very attentive to the process. I think you brought up the salient points that would need attention.

I never thought about it, but it does seem like it would work. I think I'll stick to my Oasis for conditioning KLH, though. Much easier...:)

Or you could just mix the two up, spray them down a little at a time, of the KL gets too saturated the beads will absorb it.

Interesting thought..... still seems you have to be able to "control" charging of the HFB's. If the HFB's also become over saturated they will not absorb. Quite a balancing act. Still, I'm thinking, in theory, it could work too.

I need to go dig around in the garage. I'm pretty sure I have a few lbs of KLH out there. Maybe its time to start a few experiments.

There’s defiantly a lot of potential for a lot of things involving KLH. Truth be told I was seriously considering KLH when I got my last cooler but then I thought about the smokes I was putting in and how some of them have thin wrappers so I just went with a pound of beads. The amount of tinkering vs time available to tinker on a regular basis equaled beads I could just go spray and go about my business.

totally agree... there's definently a convenience factor using HFB's.

Thin wrappers? I'm not sure I understand how thin wrappers on a cigar makes any difference in what you use for rh as long as the rh is maintain.

I meant that since I didn’t have time to tinker and klh may not be as reliable, the cigars in there would be easy to ruin.

Ahhhh, got ya. Yes, KLH is not "reliable" at the rh levels we use in our humidors until after its conditioned. I would not recommend anyone use KLH without conditioning first. Good point.
