So a guy comes over, a decent fella, maybe the boyfriend of your girl's friend...hypothetically of course... and says, "You like cigars? I lLOVE cigars....I smoke all kids of really good cigars...I tried a cuban once...so do you, like use one of the clippy things or do you bite the end off like a real man? The clippies are totally amature hour."
Now, I am a good host, and offer pretty decent scotch to anyone who walk in the door, and even to those who mihgt (gasp!) mix it, I don't offer garbage.

I REFUSE, however, to ever again give up a cigar that I am aging, or a box that I agonized over the decision, to someone who is going to bite off the end, and dip it in scotch (yes...he did).

So, I am looking for some decent bundles. Long filler, hand rolled, but that's about the end of my requirement list. They don't have to be ISOM. I am looking for pretty cheap smokes that with some time laying down (they will have planty of that), will smoke decently. A plus would be soe pretty "wrapping", perhaps a band that would lead one to beleive that the cigar is of a higher caliber. Yes, I am being slightly dihonest, and perhaps a poor host, but I don't really care. If anyone I call a friend comes over, I will split my last ISOM, Opus or PAM with them, over my last drop of Glenlivet 1969, and these are not for whom I want such cigars.

So, any suggestions?

Cbid is full of smokes that will fit your need. Read and choose.

I thought about getting oe of the Thompson "exclusive" brands. Two bundles for 55 bucks might be the way to go. Could fill an entire drawer with them.

Drew Estates makes the La Vieja Havana lines, that have colorful bands (and have the Havana name!), so perhaps you can fool the fools with those. Here is a link to them:

Drew Estates

I have seen boxes go for as low as 15 bucks, though usually around 20 or so.

Oh god, did he really...

JR's has some good looking bundles.
Don't know how they smoke, but they look good. :whistling:

smokelaw1 - here's a place that is pretty close by: CVT

I think ConventryCat86 is known to shop there also!

They have some local cigars that look interesting. Since you live in CT, why not get some smokes with a local flavor that you can hand out. Then you can say, here you go, (the wrappers are) grown right here in our own Connecticut River Valley!

An inexpensive smoke doesn't have to be a bad smoke!

Cbid is also an excellent place to get deals.

Cheers,
Joe

Grab a box of El Rey Del Mundo Rectangulars in maduro. They are less than 3 bucks a stick and the tissue paper makes a great presentation. People will think you are spending big bucks on them.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm less concerned with people thinkig I'm spending big on them, just not that I'm smoking a really nice cigar and they are smoking sometihng the LOOKS cheap. Aynone who I think there's a chance could taste the difference would pretty much always get a good stick at my home. The more I think of it, the more I am ashamed that I ahve even thought about this. I have some decent sticks in the three dollar range in the humidor that should be the "hand-out" smoke, and I feel silly for being cheap about it.

I say hit CBid and you will find some amazing smokes at some mind blowing prices.

On your mark, get set.... BID!!!

Darren :)

Jose Piedras can be had for $40-$50 per box. Around $2 per.. and isom.

You probably would smoke them too.

Hi, smokelaw1! I suggest the Flor De Gonzalez Torpedo, available at JR Cigars, and at other cigar merchants. A box of 25 is $19.95, about 80 cents per stick. This cigar offers quality, and is easy on the wallet. Regards, knightlaird

I'll second the LVH Fumas, very classy looking stick with a cheap price tag. I always have a box on hand. I only smoke them when company is over and I have to pass out a stick or two, and oddly enough I usually enjoy smoking them. Thye can be had for $25-30/box. Anyone who doesn't smoke regularly thinks that they are getting a high end smoke.

cuban crafters has some decent cigars under the mp line, $18.00 to $22.00 handmade, long filler and you probably would'nt mind smoking them yourself. 25 to a bundle.

LOL, don't feel silly or cheap at all :D People like that deserve White Owls or Garcia y Vega  People like that who don't know much about cigars will think any long filler cigars that don't already have a "hole" in the end are high end. :p

You've got lots of great suggestions already so I won't even bother adding any.

Since you already said your feeling guilty, why not go the other direction and teach him what you know about cigars Explain to him why a cutter is 1000 times better than someones teeth, show him the dos and donts and maybe he will be giving you a few nice sticks in a couple of months as paypack.

You could also find out his email address and copy and paste the cigar 101 here into a mail

Subject: since you like cigars I thought you might like this.

Hey "decent fella" I found this darn good guide on the net and thought you would like to read it.

Sincerely,

smokelaw1

All of us were born n00bs, maybe it has fallen upon you to help him get past it.

Err maybe not the cigar 101 here lol since its not finished :p

The one over at thompson cigar is pretty good and I'm sure there is more out there.

You know, I had considered goign the teacher, passer on of knowledge route. nad again, with a friend, or someoen who mihgt become a friend, I would happil y do so, and offer my sticks up to teach. But for someoen who I will likely never see again, and who is acting like a bit of a buffoon, I think I will pass.
I wound up hitting CBid last night (DAMN YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and getting a box of 5 Vegas and some other never before heard of smokes, for a total of 60 something bucks. Not bad.
THen, of course, I won the Rocky Patel Limited Edition '05 CHest. 15 cigars, 5 Edge, 5 VIntage 1990, 5 SUn Grown, all in individual coffins.
Not sure if I got an OK deal on it, but it seems so, I paid 85 bucks.
Wait a minute...wasn't on on here looking for cheap cigars....wait what happened....
