I got this from coventrycat86 in a newbie trade. I've enjoyed many of the other smaller cigars and Bill and I even had a 2nd newbie trade where I asked him to focus on the smaller cigars for me. I'm mostly a weekend smoker and still very much a newbie, but had some extra time Thursday night. I selected this one out of the package because it looked harmless enough...ha, ha, ha

It's a shorty, only 4" long, dark brown wrapper, nice and firm. I usually punch my cigars, so I held it in my mouth while I gathered up the rest of my cigar smoking kit and went outside (I'm also an outside smoker...it's Florida!). By the time I got outside, my tongue and lips were burning. That thing was like holding a hot poker soaked in Tabasco sauce between your lips. It was as hot and peppery as I've had.

The cigar was very nicely constructed, firm, perfect shape. I punched it easily and didn't tear the cap in the process. Pre-light draw was perfect, very flavorful, with just the right amount of resistance. Easy light....I'm experimenting with different lighting techniques. Currently, I'm torching the end, then doing a slow draw...repeating as necessary. Holding the torch to the cigar while inhaling (my previous technique) doesn't seem like the right thing to do.

The first couple of puffs were strong and peppery. I let it rest a bit in the ashtray. The second round was just like the first. The cigar was flavorful and tasty, but very spicey. I tried letting it rest, puffing slowly, all the tricks I could think of...but it just kicked my butt!

About 1" in, I had a serious nic buzz and was feeling a bit light headed. I soldiered through another inch or so, but at about the 40% remaining point, I was done. I let it go out in the ashtray.

I had a small glass of merlot with the cigar. The two went together nicely, but the wine seemed to amplify the spicyness of the cigar.

My wife came out at the beginning and noted that it was the "smallest cigar I've seen"....I told her that's not a good thing to say to a man! Then, when I came back inside, she asked me how it was and I had to say "It kicked my butt!"....she said, "That little thing?"

Happy Friday!

Cheers,
Joe

Joe :

If you thought the Monte No. 5 was strong, wait til you try
the San Cristobol El Pricipes ! To my taste they
are just as spicy, but quite a bit heavier (richer). The two
I sent you are from Dec 2003, so they have a little age on
them. I found them fairly smooth, but definitely a serious cigar.

You may want to age them for another six months or so..... :D

Try a bolivar beli from the same region.

A monte 2 but wait til the last third.

Both will kick ya in the pants.
