Montecristo Especial #2 (ISOM) review

I've not been a large fan of Cubans, because I've had some fairly mediocre experiences with the ones I've had, experiences that don't justify the difficulty obtaining them, or often the price and inconsistent quality. I decided to spark up the Montecristo Especial #2 I had sitting in my humidor to give Castro another shot at impressing me.

The #2 is a very nice looking cigar, with a deep brown oily wrapper, nice fat ring gauge, rolled into a very nicely constructed pyramid shape. Snipped it with my Xikar cutter, and took a little sniff before I lit it up. This one had a much more interesting smell than the Montecristo "C" I had recently, but still, I sat back skeptically and torched the foot.

The first few pulls resulted in a nice spicy flavor going off on my mouth like I'd just wolfed down a bag of pop-rocks. Daddy like. The tastes are interesting, a nice deep leathery flavor with a bit of spice rolled in to round it out. The aftertaste is quite nice, with the taste of caramelized sugar: slightly sweet, but with more complex, burnt undertones.

The draw on this cigar was perfect for me -- not too loose, but I had no problem pulling smoke out of it, and it burned straight and true to the end. The ash was a rather dark color, mostly dark grey with speckles of white here and there, and it unfortunately fell onto my carpet when it wasn't more than an inch long. Oh well, vacuuming to do tomorrow!

This cigar retained its character all throughout, I'd liken it to a baritone opera singer: deep, booming, and reverberating, but with an easy serenity to it. I didn't get any kind of a buzz from it like I've heard some people do from ISOMs, but I absolutely enjoyed this cigar.

This is one very enjoyable smoke, something that I'd be happy to have stocked in my humidor to break out for a nice relaxing, enjoyable experience. While I'm not convinced that Cubans cigars are unquestionably the best in the world, this cigar in particular certainly ranks up there in the upper echelon of cigars I've had. I stand corrected.

ooops..., I blew it, this is a Montecristo #2 -- sorry folks

The Monte# 2 is probably one of my all time favorite Cuban ceegars, maybe that's why I have em' scattered in all my humis..... :D  :p

Great review Moki. Like CC said, you'll be a true beleiver soon. :D

When they are on.....they are about as good as they come.
Not an ass kicker but medium bodied and full of flavor.
Good luck and keep trying more ISOM's.

Great review Andrew. I knew you'd come around sometime :D I am always very sad when my supply of Monty 2's gets low :( That's why I make sure that never happens

BTW, what vintage was that Monte from?

I have no idea what the vintage is; would have to ask Scott1966, he sent it to me. :)
