Over the past month or so I've been noticing a ton of stuff becoming moldy rather quickly. I just went to trader joe's (kinda like a specialty market), and I get home and find mold on the sushi I just bought. Also bought pumpkin seeds, they're moldy. Was just eating some Pistashio's I bought from there two nights ago, I just cracked several open that are filled with mold. Pumpkins from Halloween only lasted a week before they became moldy. Had strawberries sitting out over night, they're moldy the next day. I know it's not my house, because this is happening on food that I just bought! Something is definately in the air. Anyone else experiencing an abundance of moldy food lately? The strange weather may be causing an excess of mold too. Not sure. Just curious if anyone else is experiencing this...

By the way, my cigars are safe, in case you're wondering...

I was just about to say... stay away from your Humidor lol

What is the RH% inside your house Rod? You might want to have a pro look into it for you.

Strange thing is, I know it's not my house. I'm buying stuff from the market, getting home and immediately opening the food and there's mold on it! I'll do an RH test in the house anyway and just see what it is.

Ummm, no. I've got a plastic tub of pistachios on my table that is about a month old and there's no mold in sight. No mold problems here. We do tend to have mildew issues around some wet fixtures and window sills, but that's it. The weather hypothesis is an interesting one. These bouts of warm/cold/warm/cold are wreaking havoc with plants, health and other bio-systems. Freakin' global warming ;)

Yep, it's about 50 degrees at night here and in the high 80's during the day. They reported 90's in the Valley's. Definately odd weather.

Aren't you right near CIT? Ya never know what experiments they're cookin' up over there! ... very twilight zone.

Just the thought of moldy sushi (of all foods) is nauseating. :p

Alien invasion.... that's not mold, it is alien life form spores.

I was getting ready to say, this sounds like a plot to an odd B movie. I have never even heard of anything like this before. Especially on Pistachios, I have had some tubs of those sit around for years and never have a mold issue and thats in a place not shy of molding.

This is just weird, I think...

Rod, I think it's the Trader Joe's you're going to...the one near the Toy's R Us, huh?

I'm not going there anymore!

Bring your stuff back to them...not only will they give you credit, this will help them out. If you bought stuff from them that already had mold on it, then it's all over their storeroom!

The strawberries you left out, were they new and from the same location? I've seen this in Korea and Japan when a new spore is introduced to the home from one location on one or two items and it gets in the air system of the house. Then it doesn't matter if the stuff is contaminated or not, it will be. Clean all yout filters with bleach, de-humidify the house and try to maintain a 10 degree variant or less for a while. You may have to toss all exposed food (anything outside the fridge during these incidents) to ensure that additional spores linger on in the bread or whatever else you keep out.

Hope this helps.

I just wanted to add that mold is a very serious problem and needs to be taken care of as fast as possible. Alot of chronically sick people are sick due to mold and don't even know it.

I used to be one of them, my doctor told my wife and I to ditch all the house plants and open the windows wide at least once a day, I also use a "nose shower" at least 3 times a week and feel at the very least 100% better than I used to.

I think I'll stop shopping at that particular location.

On a serious note: I'd switch markets for a week or two and see if the mold continues. If not, then you've got your answer.

Mold needs moisture so have you checked or tracked your house's humidity levels?

Take the items back to the market and ask them to inspect some of their other items. Treamayne gave a lot of good advice here. The wife and I regularly "spring clean" the hous becaus I can usually pick up on the slightest bit of mold.

"Nose shower" that is a good one, also about the only way I can get rid of a sinus infection.
