Hi folks,
I've been wanting to modify my cabinet by installing a plug inside, but i'm afraid to drill a hole and ruin the cabinet. Does anyone have any ideas or links for me.
I just want to eliminate the cords hanging out from the door. I was thinking of drilling a hole from the back and sealing it. What can i use to seal it?
thnx Mr Smoker

I am not a craftsman or woodworker but I would suggest a clear/odorless silicone sealant both inside and out.

Good luck with your project.

I have seen rubber gaskets that can be used after drilling a hole through the back of the cabinet (depending on the thickness of the wood). Otherwise the clear silicone sealant is probably the way to go but get the expensive, no odor type.

Your best bet would be to use a clear and oderless silicon seal.
That us what most ppl use to seal their humidors if they are leaking.

You might try using a flanged receptacle (this is from Grainger) It will be quite easy to seal.

Then all you need to do is screw a box extension (again this is at Grainger), on over the flanged recept (outside of the box) and make your electrical connections in it.

Standard disclaimers apply. I am not an electrical engineer, your codes should be checked etc etc etc.

Thnx guys for your help...
LoL, by the way i am a licensed electrician and i was more interested on the seal side. Thnx anyhow. Ohhhhh and i will use your idea by the way, i like it.....

That's a great idea Allen. You could use just about anything to make a gasket under the flange. I'll have to make a note of that.

My humi has a hole in the back that the cords run through and I sealed it with a slit piece of sound deadner on the inside and outside of the cabinet. If the back of the cabinet is exposed or finished then you can skip the sealing with a sheet of something and use one of those cord hole covers like you see on computer desks.

OK.....I;ve decided to go with the modification thnx to gandolf565, his idea was perfect. The only trouble i'm having is finding odourless silicone. The other idea i had was to put rope light inside my cabinet any bad or good thoughts about it...when i'm finished i will post some pics...

Check these out... Led lights Shiba installed these in his humi.

Or these Flourescent tubes which I am going to install in mine.

As for odorless silicone, I think that foam weather stripping on the flange would be adequate, then use good quality (like Scotch 33) electrical tape to seal any holes on the back side. I wouldn't use the cheap vinyl tape, it always turns loose after a while.

edit to add last paragraph

I used a rope light in mine and it works just great. Unfortuneately I don't have a pic.

Although it is not that great of a picture because I was taking it in the dark, here is my humidor with the lights I installed at gandolf’s suggestion.

By no means does it make the entire cabinet like day light but it adds a great accent and allows you to see what you are looking at as well.

You like Grape White Owls too? Wow and all this time I thought I was the only one!!! :whistling:

Hi,
Well i found a sealant it's polyurethane one is called sikaflex 11fc and the other is tremco. Both have a small amount of solvent which has a small amount of smell but once it's cured there is no smell. The only thing i have to do is wait till it cures and then i can reseason my humi at the same time.
Any comments would be cool.

Why not use a low-profile outlet box, surface mount it and only run the cord through the cabinet directly behind the box

With a properly sized cord strain-relief the amount of air that would pass through or the amount of sealant required to seal that small opening would be greatly reduced or eliminated. Worse case you could stuff some foam into the hole behind the box, and not use any solvent sealer. Just my 2¢.
