This is my first review on CP, so be gentle. :)

I received this in CI's Cigar of the Month package four months back, so it had four months worth of aging in the humidor. The wrapper was gorgeous, slightly oily and dark. Great construction, no noticeable flaws.

Light-up
Pre-light draw was good, if not a little tight perhaps. Not much to note in the area of pre-light aroma. Light up was perfect, the foot toasted evenly and flared up after a couple of puffs.

The first third
The first third, honestly, was nothing to write home about. Straight up tobacco was the predominate aroma (which isn't a bad thing), but there just wasn't much to back it up. Slightly earthy if anything. Draw was a little tight as noticed during pre-light, with a medium amount of smoke (I would have been happy with a little more). Burn started even, but then started to skew toward the end of the first third, as seen here:

Middle third
This is where I really started to enjoy it. The volume of smoke almost doubled, and the cigar just seemed to settle down. The taste got more toasty than earthy, there was a little bit of spice and a hint of sweetness. The smoke was much more creamy at this stage which was a welcome change. It held an ash of about an inch and a quarter, though the ash was a bit ragged from the unevenness noted earlier. The burn itself, however, did even out. Another plus at this stage was that the draw loosened up just a tad and became much more pleasant.

Last third
With the last third, the volume of smoke remained full, but the pepper really started to come out, even started to bite a little. The only downside was that the wrapper did flake a little as seen here:

It didn't prove to be a huge problem though. It started to get a bit hot toward the end, and I tossed it with about 3/4 inch left.

Overall, not bad. I'd give another one a go sometime, but I think it would benefit from more time in the humidor to even out a little bit. If the first part had been a little more balanced with the rest, I would have enjoyed it more. As it was, I'd give it a solid 7/10.

Comments are most certainly welcome. Hope you found this helpful and interesting!

Cheers!
Paul

Aw, hell...Jaster, you've struck a chord. I just had my first Man 'O War (Torpedo) a couple days ago (At this point, every one but a Torano Reserva or Montecristo is a first...). I really enjoyed it. I noticed a change in texture and flavor as mine burned too, but I chalked it up to my inexperience and ambiance at the time. I was having a great, slow time with some friends, and the smoke just slowly, patiently burned. I was very aware that the cigar was changing as it burned, but I wouldn't have presumed to tell anyone here...I wouldn't have imagined anyone would notice, care or take a review from me seriously. You described the smoke I had perfectly! Well done, and I concur! I have several left (they were a "free gift w/ purchase of $x.xx” thing), and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Cheers!

I have a crap palate; I have a very hard time picking out the subtle flavors in a cigar. I call tell you “tobacco”, “pepper”, “gym sock”, and the “grassy” taste. Other than that, I can tell you if I liked it, how it helped my mood and things of that sort. I don’t do reviews very often, but it is not because of what I have highlighted in your post. The Brothers and Sisters around here are pretty easy going. Do your best, include as much as you can without making stuff up, and present it in a nice clean format. There is always someone out there that wants to know about what you just smoked.

Paul,
Great review. I have seen mixed feelings on these smokes. I am glad that you liked it. This cigar reminds me of the way I approached the Vigilante by Rocky Patel. (That turned out to be a pretty good cheap smoke) Keep the reviews coming.

Good review! The pictures are pretty good too! The cigar on the other hand... well, now that they have gone from, what, 6$ plus to 2$, I guess it is a better value. Every single one I have had has had wrapper problems or burn issues, and sometimes that "gym sock" taste. Yuck! I can't make up my mind about these. But great review regardless of my thoughts on the cigar! Keep em comin!

Hmmm, I actually do have a Vigilante sitting in the humidor. Maybe I'll give that one a shot next. :)

Thanks for all the kind words, guys!

I just picked up a box of these for a song to start my coolerdor (along with some padrons, Victor Sinclairs, and punches) I want to let them sit for a minute before I fire one up. Are they any good? I couldn't beat the price I got 'em for. If they're tasty I may pick up a couple of more as RP doesn't make them anymore.

Very nice review and pictures, thank you, I have been wanting to try these.

Nice review. I thought the hype was over the top and so my expectations lead to my disappointment. Not a bad smoke for $2.50 a stick like the CI Sampler.

I personally prefer the Vigilante Maduro to the Man O' War. Try the Vigilante and review it for us.
