Making your own custome table displaying cigar bands

A while back a BOTL was making his own custom table. He shared some pictures of his work in progress. I did a search had no luck finding the posting/thread. Admittedly I am a dumby when it comes to properly doing a search.

I am going to try and make one of my own based on being inspired by his idea. One of the biggest questions I have is whether or not there were any difficulties with applying the bands to the table top and the subsequent application of clear coat/shellac finish.

My goal is to make something I can bring out to the back yard while I enjoy one of my favourite cigars with a cold one. I work in the field of Corrections and there is nothing better than to come home and decompress with a cigar and a beer.

If anyone remembers the thread or who made that table, I would love to hear from you, or him.

Glad to hear it! It took a long time but it was well worth it. It is always a cool conversation piece.

I did the cigar band thing on two coolderdors, on being a 70qt, and the other being a 190?qt huge one from Costco, a while back.... back before grads school when I had time.. :p Anyway, it took a REALLY REALLY long time, and tons of patience to try and make it look good. I wound up trimming most of the bands. So in order to speed up the process, I took a big cardboard box, taped it so that it was just opened at the top. I was using spray adhesive as the main way of sticking the labels down, figuring after everything is done I would put top coats of shellac or something.
So during the multi-hour sessions of making this, I would spray a little adhesive on the bottom of the box, then lightly stick down each trimmed band with white? cigar wrapper side up, and fit as many of the trimmed bands into the bottom of the box, then gave all the bands a light-moderate spraying of the adhesive. I let the adhesive dry as per cans instructions, then stuck them to the coolerdor. Even with this large scale approach, this took FOREVER. But the results were pretty badass. I actually wound just topcoating the labels with some clear, elmers glue-like stuff instead of shellac.. its has held up since, but if you want a table for drink and ashtrays, I would think shellac would be choice.
Also, another thing I did: I wanted to see most of each cigar band, instead of dense overlapping, BUT didnt want any of the white of the coolerdor to show through... SO I starting using large paper design parts from cigar boxes as a base to which I then arranged my bands over them... I peeled/trimmed designs from box stickers, habanos authenthicity stickers and inserts, pieces of cohiba paper boxes, etc. You can use somewhat thicker pieces (i.e. the cohiba paper boxings) and although it may be uneven, you can just keep adding the top coat of shellac until it is flat and even. IDK, thats just my .02 cents. Ill try and take some pictures and post if i get the time. But Rob300C has seen them both in person, so you can ask him how they look in person if I dont get a chance to do so soon.

I made one a few years back for outdoor use. I glue-sticked the labels to a piece of plywood and polyurethaned the top and side edges but...
it wasn't adequately sealed and moisture crept in and the plys separated.
If you go my route, super duper seal it all over (top, bottom, edges)!!!

Thank you! I want to do this right to be sure. To me there is no better way to unwind than to enjoy a fine cigar with your libation of choice.Having a custom table to enjoy those moments can only add to the experience. I appreciate all the tips. Once I get started, my man cave/garage temperature is still below freezing) I will update you all.

I wish I had the ime/wasn't too lazy to do this, it is a cool idea
