Played some poker, smoked some cigars... you know the drill...
H.Upmann Magnum 46 (1/03) -- I love these cigars when they are on, and this baby was on. Some wonderful taste changes, with burnt chocolate, hints of coffee, leathery earthy flavors, and a mellow but enjoyable spice. It burned like a dream, but the taste got a little gnarly at the finish.
Davidoff Special <<7>> Robusto Real (7/04) -- The contrast with the Mag 46 was very pronounced. Having smoked the much earthier Mag 46 first really brought out the floral overtones of this cigar in a way I hadn't experienced before. Took a little while for my palate to change gears, but after they did, this settled into a very enjoyable cigar. In a few years, these will be monster cigars.
Opus X Double Corona (8/04) -- This one was a disappointment. Perhaps it was too young, but it just never really caught that spicy edge and sweetness that I love in an Opus. It was a shadow of what an Opus should be. Still it was enjoyable enough to finish it, but not a whole lot more than that.
The H.Upmann was definitely the best cigar of the night... yummy stuff. Another year or two on it, and it would have been divine (the finish was a little rough). Ending up winning only $5, which annoyed me because I was up $40... but when your Queens over 6s full house is beaten by a Queens over 9s full house, what are ya gonna do?
