Tonight, I had somewhere between 30 minutes to hour between my daughters' cookie time and lights-out. So with a little free time and a sick wife on the couch to keep a drowsy eye on the house, I set off to take a walk in the neighborhood and smoke my first Macanudo Maduro. This was in the Diplomat vitela given to me by two CP saints.
Being the newbie that I am, I've heard about notes of black cherry and cocoa in smokes, but hadn't yet experienced these sensations for myself. That was until this little cigar came into my life. Granted, I had a tough time with the draw, particularly in the first third, but by the time the burn got down to the bulbous middle, the MacMad was a tasty treat in every puff. I wrestled with the tight draw all the way through the smoke, but rolled and massaged enough of it out by the time I got down to the last third.
While I was taking my walk, I kept thinking about what kind of drink would go well with this. Pairing is still something I don't have a lot of experience with. But, even after I got home I was able to drink a little of the cheap Australian cabernet we opened for dinner and feel the effects of a nice pair. The cherry notes met up pretty well with the cab, and I was a happy dad during story time.
Like I said, I was given two of these by two different members and I'm sadly remiss in noting who they are. You probably know who you are, and I thank you. I have one left that I'm likely to have later this week, then put this smoke on my short list of 5ers or, dare I say it, boxes to buy in the near future.
Sorry there are no pictures -- I know I prefer visuals, too -- but I just wanted to write this out while the remnants of the MacMad are still in my head and my taste buds.
Good times.
