lighting technique

im sure many of you already know this but since i dont see it mentioned very often anywhere...

next time you smoke, try lighting the cigar BEFORE you cut it.

for me that means getting my torch, holding it so that just heat, not actual flame touches the foot, and evenly toasting for about ~30 sec. until the whole foot glows red.
and then cutting.

What is the benefit of this method?

Keeps any nasties from the combustion, etc., from traveling into the cigar.

Some would say to combine this with using matches or cedar strips.

I will certainly agree that being too aggressive while lighting can negatively affect the flavors of a cigar.
 
I saw that type of technique on CA's website. Even though it looks pretty cool, I haven't tried it yet. I guess I like taking a cold draw first to see if it's plugged. Here ya go Gordon Mott Blog
