La Flor Dominica Ligero Oscuro 500

(Box Split by Lumberg...)

Well, I got my beautiful sticks in the mail, threw them in the humidor and was happy. Then, as I sat in my room working through some great non-fiction for homework (how often does one get to choose a great book for their college reading assignments. "The Guts to Try" by Col. (Ret) Kyle.) this voice called to me. I answered.

This stick was a monster 60 ring with a great feel and look. It had one large vein and no obvious construction flaws. Pre-ilght smell and flavor were excellent. Now I don't have the best palate, but the draw was rich and smooth. The flavor was earthy - with a rich hint that may have been chocolate. Although the strength was evident (not as strong as other LFDs I'd had, though) it never seemed overpowering or peppery. The earthy/woody flavors built with the strength over the first couple inches then mellowed (or I acclimated....) Burn was even and construction great. I went to two inches of nice white/grey ash before I knocked it off. (I was reading on my bed, propped on pillows and didn't want to risk it.)

At about the mid point the cresecndo peaked and held for a bit before gradually lowering down. The chocolate/coffee-ish flavor returned a bit stronger than before. I had a small bit of tunnelling and touchups with an inch or two left - but that was probably my fault for rushing such an excellent stick. Got a little hot in the last 3/4 inch and that's where i left it. Great stick that made me glad I was in the box split and slightly upset that I only got 8 sticks total. If it was great now, imagine 1,2 or 4 years hence. If they last that long.....

Great review! Think Ill go to work and pull one of these off the shelf. We have a full line of la flor and i love em all, especially this oscuro. Gonna get to meet Litto Gomez as he will be in our shop on the 23rd. Cant wait.

Ditto :)

I've had 1 of the 500's and 2 of the 300's so far (we both did the 4x4 split). I think the flavor is a little fuller on the smaller ones - more of a floral smell and taste at the midpoint. I'll definitely be looking into a box of the 300's as soon as I can afford to buy again :-p

Thanks for the review!

I ljust ove the proportions of the stick...nice and solid in the hand.

I had another of the 500's last night and they are vastly inferior to the smaller gauge IMO (as newbile as it is). They tend to burn a lot cooler, which sounds nice but means you have to give it a lot of attention or it will go out (only happened once last night, but it was right after I lit it and put it down for about 2-3 minutes to fill out some stuff in Cigar Briefcase). The full flavor is also muted compared to the 300's, and they amount of smoke from the draw is a lot less then you'd expect from a stick this size, especially compared to the volume that it's smaller sibling is capable of.

Bottom line, I really like the 300's - but I still wouldn't turn down a 500. I'd like to try a 400 and see how it compares to both in a 3-way face-off :p

Great reviews, guys. I have found that the smaller ring gauges give a more intense flavor output on these sticks. The oscuros naturals have become one of my primary everyday-smoking-cigars.

I also like the L300 oscuros more than the other sizes. I really like the flavor of the oscuro wrapper and I think that you get more of it with the smaller ring size. Got a box aging in the coolador :D !

Perhaps smoke it dry next time. Leave it out for 24 hours before you smoke it. It is an oily cigar, any extra moisture is going to make it burn worse.
