La Flor Dominica Double Ligero 452 Maduro
Length: 4"
Ring: 52
Make: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Maduro
I was in my local B&M this afternoon and this new stick by LFD caught my eye. It's been butt cold here and I've been looking for a nice quick little cigar to try. I've had a few of the other DL's (chisel, lancero) and thought they were OK, but was curious to try the maduro.
The cigar was very well constructed - just a bit of spring when squeezed with no soft or hard spots and the wrapper was in good shape. It clipped very clean with my Xikar, and the prelight draw was a little sweet with some spice on the lips. I toasted the foot, lit the cigar and was greeted with a powerhouse of flavor - very full in body and extremely full in flavor. The initial flavor was very dark with a deep coffee/espresso flavor, like that you'd find in a strong french roast. There were also hints of dark toasted nuts and a touch of pepper. The burn was very good, requiring only one slight touch up. The draw was fantastic throughout, a good full draw that produced tons of smoke.
After about an inch, the intensity of the flavor backed down a bit and the spice faded away. A sweeter rich undertone developed like you'd except from a maduro wrapper. The espresso flavor blended very nicely with dark chocolatish notes. The cigar didn't lose any body or strength though, and I could feel the nic punch in this little guy. Not as strong as a chisel, but it definitely packs a punch. My shop keep had mentioned that one of his new customers had tried one earlier in the week - on an empty stomach - and it turned him green. Silly noobs  . I had a nice cup of Mexican Mayhem coffee (Jerry's Killer Beans), and it paired wonderfully with this cigar.
The cigar finished similar to the middle half, with the sweeter maduro flavor dominating towards the very end. I endured the cold for a bit longer to nub it (well, as far as my frozen fingers would allow ). It took me about a half hour to finish, though I'm a pretty slow smoker. I'd say this blend is fairly similar to the LFD DL chisel in flavor, but not as spicey or peppery, substituting in that nice rich maduro flavor.
I really enjoyed this smoke, and will be heading back to the B&M the next chance I get to grab some more. The lone downside I found was that the flavor was a little young and green (the B&M said he just got them in), but I think a bit of down time could turn this into a fantastic cigar!
