This was my first La Gloria Cubana. And one of my first really dark maduros. I had always stayed away from the darker ones until recently. I guess I expected them to be too strong. Well, when I joined CP it was to get out of my rut and try something new.
It was a slow work day today and allowed me to stop into a local shop I hadn't frequented. I chatted up the shopkeeper, and there was a gentleman rolling cigars and bundling them right in the shop. I guess this is that shops specialty as they sell bundles this man puts together. I tried one of his for 3 bucks and perused the shelves.
I settled on a La Gloria Cubana Series R robusto. It is perhaps the darkest cigar I have ever seen. Equadoran wrapper I am told. I decided to try it on the ride home. The draw was just fine. The first thing I noticed was how smooth it was. Almost sweet. I have been looking for more complex flavors in my smoking these days and this one provided it. It was at once nutty, almost fruity, and earthy. Lots of smoke.
The burn had to be adjusted twice, something I can forgive. The ash was dark and when I knocked it off at about an inch and a quarter the flavor changed, it seemed. There were stronger notes of cedar added to the mix. And the spikes of stronger spiciness started.
I only got about halfway through it when I was home. The miles had flown by. When I got out of my truck I noticed what a buzz this smoke had delivered. This is not a bad medium priced smoke. Will have to try another one.
