La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero Lancero (7 1/2" x 39)

One of my favorite things about smoking cigars is the constant influx of new vitolas and blends from cigar makers who are always pushing the envelope and experimenting. It's all well and good to find cigars that are to your liking, and smoke them, but to do so at the exclusion of sampling with new arrivals would be dreadfully boring to me. One cigar maker that I've wanted to love for some time is La Flor Dominicana.

Based out of the Dominican Republic, Litto Gomez's La Flor Dominicana has come up with some interesting cigars over the years, but none have hit the sweet spot for my palate. The Double Ligero Chisel is an innovative vitola, but is more about strength than flavor. The LG Diez is a nice Dominican puro, but currently tastes a bit unrefined to me. The Double Ligero Churchill Especiales Oscuros, which served as a testbed for Litto's specially processed natural oscuro wrapper, were to date the best La Flor Dominicana's I've had. Until now.

After already having several cigars watching football at the local club, I decided to give a LFD Double Ligero Lancero a try. These cigars are not yet a regular production LFD cigar (though boxes can be had), and I'm not sure if they will be. I sincerely hope they will reach regular production.

This beautifully rolled lancero boasts a neat pig tail, and the same wonderful natural oscuro wrapper that Litto uses on the Churchill Especiales, and Limitado II. What was remarkable to me about this cigar was how complex it was, with a wonderful roller coaster ride of tastes, despite the relatively thin vitola and youth of the cigar.

The LFD Double Ligero Lancero started off with the typical spice-bomb "oh my god, hold on for dear life" profile you may have experienced with other cigars in the Double Ligero line. A bit into the cigar, the spice eased up, and transitioned into a wonderful spiced cocoa flavor that lasted to about the halfway point of the cigar.

Then the cigar once again changed pace, and mellowed into really enjoyable medium bodied smoke, with hints of roasted chestnuts, and a molasses-sweet cedary profile that was both enjoyable and surprising. The finish was the only part of the experience that belied the relative youth of these cigars, exhibiting the pleasant bitterness of a slightly over-brewed Sencha tea.

I gave this cigar to two buddies of mine who were watching the game, and despite having very different tastes in cigars, all three of us were impressed. All three of us also experienced the aforementioned complexity in taste changes, which leads me to believe that the cigars are intentionally blended this way.

The cigar burned straight and true to the end, with nary a touchup needed, and a draw that was neither too tight, nor too loose. Recommended!

Very nice review Andrew. Our local usually gets in quite a few LFDs - I've tried a few of the Ligeros and really enjoyed it. Sounds like this one may be a winner. I know Scot (cigardawg) is a big fan of the LFD Double Ligero line and would probably really enjoy this size.

Great review!

If I ever get my hands on these, I'll need to find someone to smoke the first half for me. :D

I don't know about the sencha though. Overbrewed sencha, at least the stuff I drink, gets astringent and nasty upon over extraction. Yuk. Chestnuts, though, I can dig. :)

Yeah as I nubbed it, it did indeed get that astringent bitter taste... but it wasn't entirely unpleasant, and I attribute that part of the smoke to the youth of the tobacco. If you don't smoke it to the last 1/2", you probably won't taste it. That, or age 'em a bit. :)

Great review...!! I was gifted a couple of the L300's and really liked them....enough to order a box for the cooler....

Best Regards - B.B.S.

Great review Andrew! I've had my eye on these for awhile (my local has a box) but haven't gotten around to trying them yet, but it looks like I'll be giving them a shot very soon.

Hrm... you sure that they have the Lanceros in the shop? I'm not sure that's possible...?

I got one of these from Outlaw Scott. I've got it tucked away for a night when the mrs. is out of the house...so I can throughly enjoy this puppy.

The reason I said "Are you sure your local shop has a box of these" is that it is my understanding that these are cigars that Litto brings to tasting events... and only one shop in the USA has boxes of them (and they aren't in Texas :) )

Thanks for the review on a great looking stick Moki. The trouble with reading great reviews is my list of "must have" keeps growing at a faster pace than I can afford or find. Ha :whistling:

I have one similiar to this stick.I am not sure what it is other than a Double Ligero LFD cigar with a pig tail on the end. The wrapper looks like the pattern of a spotted cheetah for some reason. It looks kinda freaky in the humidor and its been in there since July 2005 and was like it when I picked it up. It was the only one in the box that looked odd. :whistling:

That is very likely to be a Churchill Especiales Oscuro, not the Lancero I reviewed.

Good thing ya all here so I know what I have at times. I just buy and forget what I have in the humidor so I need to come up with a system which I can keep track of these bad boys. Either way, its gonna be a yummy stick. I havent found a LFD that I didnt like nor to knock me on my arse yet. Well, The Chisel almost did when I was starving and smoked it anyways. I also smoked the Tatuaje Conoju on an empty stomach.

Andrew, we have them. The requirement for getting them is that you have had an event with Litto. It's open order from that point on.

aaaahhhhhhh... very nice. Thanks for the info. What do you think of 'em?

Sorry brothers I spoke to soon. That was the cigars Litto and Jack Sandlin were smoking themselfs at our event. I believe the cigars we have and the one Indyrob has are different. It's about that lenght but the ring is slightly larger about a 42. I'll send you one Moki and you can put them side to side if you still have one.

hrm, 42 would be a little fat for a Lancero, but it could be the same cigar.

Are we confusing the DL Churchill Especiales Oscuro Natural with the Lancero? The Especiales is about 7x48 with the same pigtail.

No..I mentioned I had one that looked like this but it isnt a Lancero. I have a bad habit of getting cigars and have no idea what they are later. And my original post I even stated I have no idea what it is. :D

Nice review Moki. I've had a few LFD's and LFD2000's and really enjoyed them. Haven't had anything from the Ligero line, but I'll definitely keep an eye out for this one.
