La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero Lancero Oscuro

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sun Grown
Binder: Dominican
Filler: Dominican
Strength: Medium - Full

During the month of October, my girlfriend Deanna and I took a week vacation up to Yosemite National Park, during which we passed through the city of Frenso. Located a few miles off the main highway is a shop called Cigars Limited, so naturally after a long drive up from Los Angeles we needed a break, and what better way to relax than a great cigar! While there, I picked up a few cigars that I don't normally see down in my neck of the woods, and one of them was this cigar from La Flor Dominicana. From what I have heard and read, this isn't a limited release, but due to the popularity of it and the lower production rate, it is somewhat difficult to find. I've not had much experience with the LFD brand other than the Factory Press III, which I enjoy immensely, but I figured I could not pass up the chance to try something new!

Pre-Light

I was a bit surprised when I pulled the cellophane off of the cigar to find it looked pretty rough. While I have not smoked many LFD cigars, the few I have had were of top notch construction, so I had expected this cigar to be the same. The cigar itself had a slight bowing to it, while the foot was squished into a squarish shape from the cellophane. The head was equally as rough, with an off kilter cap and a lot of visible excess pectin. The wrapper had bumps and divots all over it, with several large veins running along it in various lengths. The squeeze test revealed several soft spots, which concerned me that the draw may be too loose. One thing I would have to say is that the scent of the wrapper was a terrific, deliciously spicy smell that had my mouth watering.

Draw & Burn

Once punched, my initial concerns of too lose a draw proved unfounded, thankfully. I found a perfect resistance that produced a huge amount of smoke, and the draw stayed consistent throughout the duration of the smoke. After slowly toasting the foot until it glowed bright orange, the burn slowly marched down the length of the cigar with a razor sharp line, also proving that, while a bit ugly, the cigar was actually well constructed. The ash left behind was a very light gray, and held on for an inch without problem until gently tapped off.

Flavor Profile

The pre-light draw was ripe with a rich tobacco flavor that, once lit, was the main core of the flavor profile backed up by alternating complexities. The nuances ranged from coffee bean, black pepper, leather, and a sweetness that reminded me a bit of caramel. The finish was long and lip smacking good, leaving behind a spiciness that tingled the tongue. The smoke carried on it pepper that tickled the nose, but was not overpowering.

Overall Impression

I know that the Double Ligero line of La Flor Dominicana is supposed to be a powerhouse blend that is full flavored and full bodied, but for the Lancero vitola they backed down the ligero amount as it was simply not feasible to pack a ton of ligero into that small a ring gauge coupled with such a length. Despite this, I found that the flavor and strength was still in the medium to almost full range, and quite enjoyable. I love lanceros, and these only reinforce my feeling that it is truly one of, if not the best size. I'll be keeping this on my wish list for sure, and now that I know there are a few other blends in this vitola from Litto Gomez, I'll be adding those as well!

Very nice review. I have several older ones left from a box and every time I smoke one they are delicious.

Just goes to show you, its hard to judge a book by its cover. The look of the wrapper doesn't have much to do with how the cigar will burn. Look at the OR tatuaje blacks, those are some ugly, occasionally misshapen cigars, but they usually smoke pretty well.
