A heck of a long time ago, I pulled this cigar out of a pass that Clown started, the one where he made custom bands for each participant.

I had never smoke nor ever heard of La Aurora but the funny red tube this perfecto was in looked interesting so I grabbed it. Since I'm becoming the consummate Cigar Snob of late, I never seem to smoke those domestics I have hanging around in the humi :0

So tonight I says, "Let's smoke my one monthly non-Havana and see why I'll never go back."

First I checked out the CI website where my notes indicate this cigar can be purchased. Here's what they say:

La Aurora is the oldest cigar made in the Dominican Republic grown in the same fields of the Cibao Valley for over 3 generations.

In fact, La Auroras are like a national treasure down there - it’s the best selling brand within the country. Those who have discovered this brand know it as a smooth and mild "steady workhorse" of a cigar - always dependable and delicious. La Aurora has been using Dominican-grown leaves from the same fields in the Cibao Valley region for over three generations - a testament to its consistency. The dark Cameroon wrappers from West Africa are the icing on the cake of this mellow-tasting mild cigar.

The Preferidos line was the first cigar manufactured in the Dominican Republic back in 1903. Its beautiful, unique shape was designed to offer a perfect smoke of varying intensities. Preferidos, the cigar that established the cigar-making tradition of the Dominican Republic, is now rolled in limited quantities. This time-tested, super-premium cigar offers rich Cameroon wrappers and Dominican fillers.

The La Aurora Preferido Gold Corojo was named one of Cigar Aficionado's top 50 cigars for 2004. Along with an '89' rating, this is what they had to say:

"A rich, dark perfecto with a superb burn. It has a brawny, leathery flavor with notes of oaked Bourbon, earth and minerals, medium to full in body."

 I sez, Looks like the writers from Thompson now work for CI :p

I clip the cigar and my pre-light draw all of a sudden sparks my interest, A NICE FIRM, HAVANA-LIKE DRAW. I imediately scroll down the CI page to get the prices on these only to find that there are FOUR different Preferidos #2's and some of 'em are darn expensive :0 When I realize I have a $13.00+ cigar in my hand, I'm like "This is WAY overpriced for some no-big-deal mild cigar."

So, I light it up and WOW was I wrong. This cigar burned PERFECTLY, tasted absolutely wonderful, had a pleasant smoke that is not overpowering, and supposedly it's "mild" but to me, it has a little more kick than your average mild cigar. :) I'm generally not a fan of the perfecto vitolas BUT I'll make an exception in this case ;) The ash was a fine, light grey, not flaky and it reminded me of the ash I see on Opus X ceegars. My taste buds are too burned out to distinguish the "notes of oaked Bourbon, earth and minerals" but those with a more sensitive sense of taste would probably experience this. This was one DELICIOUS cigar :)

Have I missed something, have other people raved about La Aurora Preferidos maduros and I wasn't paying attention or what? I don't ever remember these cigars ever being discussed here.

This was one FANTASTIC cigar, granted a little pricey but if I'm paying $10.00 - $20.00 for Opus X then these are worth it as well.

I highly recommend this cigar

On the cA rating scale:

these ae GREAT, I smoked my 1st one on my way to the March Meadowlands Madness last year. I bought 2 for the road trip for my B/inlaw and myself, lit them up at the NH/Mass boarder an enjoyed them all the way to the NY/NJ boarder. We both commented on what an enjoyable smoke these where, even thou he was floored by the cost ($17 each) it was worth every penny to me.
Sense then I have picked up a few more for myself and a few for the last Kuwait Kare Package that just went out ( shop owner sold them to me for $12 a piece, I bought 12 - 4 of each ).
So sitting carefully in my humi I am now the proud owner of a 1 Maduro#2, Gold & Platinum, I look forward to adding a Sapphire & Red and I think there is one other type out there ?
These cigars arent easy to find in singles around my way, they sell out fast. So if you have the chance to pick one of them up I highly recommend it.

Well CC, I smoked one of them last Friday at Cigarz on Universal's City Walk and I'll tell you, you hit it right on the head. A great smoke for a bit of a price. I too highly recommend these cigars for that special occasion....... :D  :p

I had the Maduro (Red tube) a month or two back. I remeber liking it. Good even burn, which I got my hands on a Zino Chubby Crown Series and I had a really bad uneven burn with it. I always thought it was the funny shape. I smoked the Cameroon (Platinum tube) this past Saturday. I'm a fan of La Aurora cigars. I've got two 100 Anniversaries in the humi right now. I'm trying the Natural (Sapphire tube) next. I'll let you know what I think.

These are great cigars. I picked up a box a couple of years ago and have slowly been going through them. I think I will have to have one tonight now that I have been thinking about them.

ive seen these at my shop but have always shyed away from the $17 price tag. if anyone has some lying around they want to trade....i got some opus, pad anniv. or isoms.....?

Thanks for the review CC...I've been meaning to try these and now I guess I will

Me too marc, they are definately pricey but I think they rank right up there with Davidoffs, Opus X, Padron, etc.

I probably would not buy a whole box but I don't buy whole boxes of any of the other ones I mentioned either :p

They're nice to have a few in the humi for a treat or a change of pace ;)

These are great smokes....You can find these without the tube for about $5.00 less. Be sure to save the tube and restock them.

They also come in a maduro and sun grown wrapper...the latest is the saphire in a blue tube...Not as good as the maddie or sungrown IMHO.

But what do I know......

You can find these without the tube for about $5.00 less.
Big100HD

They still run about the same here. I think it's a dollar and a half less. You lucky jerk! lol j/k

:D

You can find the tubes at Alantic Cigar for $10.26 with shipping. $239.20 per box of 24. Best price I've seen yet.

I prefer the larger Preferidos Maduro #1 (6x58)box 25 $209.00 (without the tube)$8.36 per stick

The Preferidos Maduro #2 (5x54)box25 (without the tube) $176.00 $7.04 per stick

MMM, maybe a box split is in order...

I'd be in for some of that action on the No 2's Big.....that is, if you be interested

I still owe ya some artillary :whistling:

Kingpin sent me one of these (Red Tube Maduro) with his Secret Santa bomb... I don't know whether to smoke it or just admire the hell out of it.

Ah hell, I know I'm gonna smoke it, but it just looks and smells so damn good.

And I'd take a fiver if a split gets put together.

I already got em.... just received them today.........

I posted a fiver split at $40.... here's the math, feel free to adjust shipping / quantities:

$176 + $7 shipping =$183 / 25 = $7.32 $36.60 a fiver + $3.40 shipping.....

If anyone wants any, let me know, except Big100HD, his money is no good , he only understands artillary..... :D

Thanks, HFM... I'm good for now. When it rains it pours... Big100HD ordered a box a couple of hours ago based on my going in on a fiver. Not sure if he is going to post a split on the remainder or not. Same nice price, tho. I'm sure they will go quickly.

I posted on the other thread as well. The box I received had a QA tag in there from Nov 02. Is this typical?

The smokes were pretty dry, definitely (<<<<< how 'bout that CC) need some time in the humi.

I set fire to one of the gold tube ones this evening:
la-aurora.jpg

...and had really been looking forward to it. I planned on attempting a review, but then I found this thread.
I found this cigar to be pretty underwhelming. sorta just a one-dimensional smoke, with nothing more jumping out at my taste buds other than tobacco ablaze. seemed about medium bodied, and not bad, per se, but with the nice presentation and the price tag, I guess I expected more.
however, seeing as my experience is in the lonely minority here, maybe I just got a dud.
I find it hard to drop $17ish for another attempt after a sub-par experience, though.
c'est la vie!

Hmmm.... I've been wanting to try the gold and the platinum tube smokes. So far, I've only tried the red tube, maduro.

Anyone know if these have a lot of difference in their taste? Or are they pretty much the same across the board regardless?
