The other night I ended up working late; I didn't leave the client's site until almost 9:30pm. After I made it home I figured that I still had some research to do on some tech issues, and really wanted to smoke a cigar. I am staying in a hotel room that is non-smoking, so smoking it here is out of the question. And it is getting pretty late, so I don't know if I have time to go have a smoke and study and still get to bed at a reasonable hour. So I decide to throw posterity and conventionality out the window. I take some manuals, my MP3 player, my Boss noise cancelling headphones, and my little travel humidor down to Bernie's Bungalow - one of the few bars that will let you smoke a cigar.
It was pretty quiet, only about 10 people in the place. I choose a nice little table in the corner surrounded by couches, laid out my manuals, turned on some tunes, and had a captian and coke while I decided what to smoke. I saw the La Aurora Preferido sitting in there, and thought that would be perfect for a quick little smoke to do some reading with. I happened across this little beauty from Kro77; he sent it to me when I won poker one night. And I have been debating about when would be the right time for this little guy.
Now was definitely the time, and I was very suprised by this cigar. I knew absolutely nothing about it, other than it looked really cool. As I sat and admired it before I lit it up, I remembered how Swissy told me he is keeping a little cigar diary, where he sticks the label at the top and then reviews the cigar. I have a little book at home I want to start doing that with, but I don't have it with me. So I thought I would write a little review and then transfer it to the book. Hell, I might as well give a little online review.
It is a tiny guy, only about 3.5 or 4 inches long, and shapped like a Zeppelin. It is very well constructed and firm. There were no large veins of any sort, and very symetrically wrapped. Cutting off the end I noticed the tobacco was extreemely packed. I tried the draw and found it difficult, almost impossible to get any. Being out of my element, I pondered my options ....
So I went up to the waitress at the bar and asked if she would help me find a little screw. The look on her face was priceless. "Seriously, I just need a little drywall screw or even a longer screw. Any chance you can help?" After giving me a funny sideways glance, she said she might be able to find one upstairs. You gotta love the hospitality in Alaska.
She came back in a few minutes w/ a little screw. "Ok, I have to ask what this is for." - "You probably thought I was throwing you a pickup line?" So I showed her the cigar and the problem at hand. I even had her try to draw on it; she got nowhere too. Then I screwed it in the cut end, screwed it back out and tested the draw. Much better. I handed it to her, and she was really suprised. I learned that trick from SteveHawk who said he read it here. "Oh, I probably ruined your cigar with my lipstick." "No, I'm positive that would only enhance the flavor."
I haven't even lit the cigar yet, and it was a good choice. The cigar lights very easily, and starts burning very evenly too. It seems I usually need a couple of matches on the road to get all the edges at about the same burn, but this lit evenly right off the bat. The ash is a strong whiteish-grey and very solid; an inch into smoking it shows no signs of major cracking. Very well made.
So, Johanna says she has tried cigars a couple of times, so I offer her a puff. "I don't know; will it make me sick to my stomach?" Fortunately for her, this is one smooth smoke, with no spicy or peppery taste. It doesn't seem to have a ton of nicotine either, more of a well rounded mild/medium body. It doesn't produce much smoke, definitely not as much as I typically like. "That's not bad at all." My sentiments exactly!
I am such a geek. I am sat in this bar w/ my noise cancelling headphones, rockin to Tool instead of the miscellaneous drivel playing in the bar, smoking my cigar in the corner and reading tech installation guides while drinking my captain and coke. Not too bad of an evening after all.
Then I get totally interrupted. I am smoking the tail end of the cigar. It appears that using the fat screw and the smoke has dried out the cap enough to start having some cracking in the wrapper. A couple of people ask if they can sit across from me; I don't care, sure. Then the chit chat starts and I figure I am just about done with my cigar and at a good stoping place in the manuals, so we start chatting.
The couple is really nice. I guess they aren't technically a couple, I am informed. One is recently getting a divorce finallized and they are just **** buddies. She said it and he gets a **** eating grin on his face. You know that if he would have said it, his ass would be out in the rain.
They are fun and we keep chatting. I decide to have another cigar and stay for awhile. I don't remember what the second one was because I started getting a little distracted. Since I already had my camera on the table from taking a picture of my cigar, I figured I might as well capture the moment. :whistling:
These guys really like each other.
She did say she was something of an exhibitionist. So I egged it on; I think the camera helped.
That's right! Give the lonely guy on the road something to remember.
That was as far as it got, and those should all still be work friendly. I just thought I would share.
Oh yea, the cigar. It was really good and I would smoke one again; especially if I only had a little time and didn't want to be smoking for an hour or so. I think my wife would like that cigar too.
So thanks Kro77 for kicking off a great night!
Cheers!
