La Aurora Preferido Robusto
5"x50
Wrapper:Cameroon
Binder: Dominican
Filler: Dominican
Price: $9.00 (cigar.com)
Location: Gladly banished to the attic after a LONG day at the office. Sammy Smiths Taddy in hand and a good book.
This cigar is a work of art. For $9 it ought to be. The wrapper was a deep oily brown, silky, with few veins and no noticable seams. It was packed well from end to end. The prelight aroma was muted and bready(i love making up words!. The prelight draw was spoungy and nearly perfect.
The cigar lit easily and started smooth and creamy from the first draw, which stayed perfect the whole time. And then spice...not hard hitting peppery spice, but mellow almost spicecake kinda spice. There was a great deal of it on the nose along with ceder. Very tasty.
The problem...It stopped there. It grew a bit deeper and even became creamier with some leather on the back, but that was it. I smoke on hoping for some dimension, searching for another flavor. I stopped drinking beer thinking it might be overpowering the cigar, but no go. It was very flavorful, but held onto the lower side of the medium bodied level never to change it's profile.
After the 2/3's point I gave up hoping and sat back to enjoy the rest. I smoked it to the nub with no heat. All in all, it was an enjoyable time. I would definately smoke it with a tawney port, or strong coffee, but the two I have left will probably be it. I do enjoy the La Aurora Preferido line no matter the price, but my score won't come near any other's I have seen.
I give it an 89 for great taste and construction. But no 90 for lack of depth and complexity.
