La Aroma de Cuba Review

After two days of dust storms and then yesterday's mid afternoon rain here in Baghdad, Iraq this morning was considerably clearer and cooler than the last week so I decided to turn to one of my favorite cigars, a La Aroma de Cuba for my Sunday morning smoke. I purchased a box of these shortly after getting into country and have about eight of them left, smoking most of the box but giving away several to friends and BOTLs because its just a damn good cigar.

Temperature: 84 degrees Fahrenheit
Ambient RH: 25%
Wind: from the SE at 8mph
Sunny, clear, beautiful.

After re-introduction by Ashton in 2002, La Aroma de Cuba was re-blended in 2008 to fantastic effect, noted by the red ribbon on the foot. Blended by Don Pepin Garcia this Nicaraguan puro is a very nice medium brown cigar with a complete matte sheen and a firm but yielding feel and decent heft. The wrapper has moderate veins though none of them prominent and a slight lumpiness.

Pre-light draw was perfect, providing just enough resistance to prevent a hot burn but not so much to demand much effort.

The wrapper on the end split about 1" after lighting but it didn't impact the burn whatsoever, just producing a slight bell shape to the ash. Initial puffs revealed light pepper and a hint of bitter leather which was unusual for this cigar. The pepper and bitterness faded quickly followed by a rich smooth smoke that didn't reveal any particular flavors, just well blended tobacco. (I'm not a super taster.) The burn was a bit uneven at first but leveled out after the first inch or so.

The second and last third were exactly the same; smooth, rich tobacco that offered a hint of aromatic sweetness but not in a grassy way, more of a nice big woodiness and maybe a hint of spice. The thing I love about this cigar is its not BIG FLAVOR but its not subdued either. Its just a masterfully blended medley of good tobacco where nothing is undesirable or distracting. After the first ash the burn stayed razor sharp with a very nice saw-tooth pattern as you can see in the picture below. The quality of construction, the evenness of the burn and thick aromatic smoke really come together to make this a consistently good choice.

This is definitely not a blind or objective review because I've smoked quite a few of this brand. Of all the cigars I've had more than two of, the La Aroma de Cuba is far and away my favorite. Its not a big nicotine bomb though you will feel a mild nicotine kick once finished. Its my favorite fall back cigar when I don't feel like trying something new but want a 65 minute smoke on a beautiful Sunday morning while reading a novel.

K. M. Score: 4.5/5

Thanks for the review, Kid. The La Aroma de Cuba is also one of my "go to" cigars. A great smoke at a reasonable price.

Completely agree with Chris. La Aroma is a fantastic cigar. I always have a few of these stashed away in the cooler. Love 'em! Great review too!
