Well, pre-teens, anyway.  I guess this is payback for my behavior at the same age... which I will admittedly recall as being much the same.

We are currently in the final throes of a weeklong vacation down in Bavaria.  The most awesomely awesome part about this entire trip is that my pre-teen daughter is absolutely apathetic about the prospect of visiting four countries in one day, driving through the Swiss Alps, spending time in one of the five smallest nations in Europe, climbing around castles and ruins that are thousands of years old, and seeing stuff that most kids her age will only ever read about in school text books. Oh well, at least I got to go to Liechtenstein.  My six-year-old is enjoying herself, however. I understand that's just a byproduct of being six years old, though. I really need to find a way to stop her from growing any more.

lol...kids are kids all over the world.

She won't show it now, God forbid, because it's so un-cool, but she'll never forget it either.

I got to travel and visit many south western states in the US and about 4 states in Mexico as a Pre teen. Traveled with my mom, grandparents, younger brother and often 2 cousins. These trips were fun for me. Many times just depends on the child, and or the relationship they have with family. No matter how uninterested she may have seemed, I agree that she will never forget it. Oh that payback stuff, I believe to be very true, it happens. Happy and safe travels!

Daughters are tough; I found my son went with the flow much easier than my daughter, even today at 25 she can be a hand full. Good luck, it sounds like a great vacation destination.

Probably just hormones and being with mom and dad instead of cool friends. Bet she goes back to school and brags about it though ( in their own unique language ). Nice you could do that for the family.

Pre-teen? Ha! the worst is yet to come.

Doc

We've been lucky with our girls (9 and 14).  They seem to have inherited our love of travel.  They've endured 14 hour plane journeys and 4100 mile road trips and all the while asking where to for the next vacation.

I know she will appreciate it someday, and will even go back to school and tell everyone where she went this summer when the inevitable question comes up from the teacher (we're going to Scotland next weekend, as well).  I was an absolute shit in my teens, as well, because of the whole "cool factor".  I admit it.  I know it's the same with her and if she had a friend her own age to hang out with she'd be having a lot more fun.  I know she's enjoying some of it, but you'd never know it from the blase look on her face most of the time.  I also know that someday (perhaps next summer when we get somewhere where all her peers aren't in Europe and "going to all the same places", as well) she will understand the opportunities a bit better when she will have done and seen things that many of her classmates and friends have not).  Right now, though, I want to hang her by her nostrils...

Doc, I have exactly one month and five days until we hit the teenage years.  I'm already researching how to bring my firearms to Hawaii with me (land of hot weather, beach-kissed golden skin, and little clothing).

This made me chuckle because I asked my 6yr old daughter to stop growing the other day. Wonderful time!! Have a great time on vacation!

*Edit:  Okay, WOW!  I'm not allowed to edit posts while on my tablet.....ever again!  FAIL!

That's why I leave the kids (3,13,16) with baby sitters. If they can't/won't show interest, we won't waste time or money taking them. We're planning a European trip next May without em. We will be doing a family trip to Florida though, the older kids like the beach.

I went on a handful of summer vacations with the family when I was younger and we went to some really nice places. Looking back on it I wish I could do it over again. Most the time I'm sure I was a typical bratty kid. Funny how growing older changes your perspective on things. Not much you can do to change it. It's just the normal cycle of life.

If you find yourself around the Frankfurt/Rhineland area in Germany, let me know.

I remember enjoying family trips when I young, till about the age of 15-16 when waking up early and going to sleep early on vacation didn't work for me anymore.

We'll be staying with friends in Cologne, We do plan on Flying into Frankfurt as it's around $150.00 cheaper per ticket than flying into Luxembourg. We plan on staying in Germany for 3-4 days with friends with a day trip to Luxembourg and Belgium. We would also love to hit up the Netherlands, but not set on plans just yet. We're also taking the train back to Paris for 3 more days. :)

P.S. we'll have a car available to us, sooo driving to meet up will be highly likely :P

Cool.  I'm 2'ish hours south of Cologne (Koln).  Been there a few times.  We were actually there for NYE this year, and it was farkin' AMAZING.  Let me know when the time gets closer and we'll work something out.

Good luck with the kids, they will always look back on it and have the memories.

If you guys do manage to meet up, will this be the furthest scheduled meetup in CP history?

From Colorado-Germany is quite a ways to go, very cool!

Indeed.  John is actually going to be at Ramstein where I live (he's there now, actually), but I think we are going to miss each other in passing since I'm getting back from vacation tonight and he's leaving tomorrow morning (as are my wife and I for a music fest in Rothenburg).

International herf!

I am at Ramstein right now, actually. We're leaving here on Sunday, btw.

I'll be up for a herf in May or setting up something in Brussels if you're coming through there.

John, we JUST got back in the door.  It took us roughly 7.5 hrs to get back from Garmisch due to staus and stop and go traffic most of the way.  I'm just absolutely beat and I'm going to bed early like an old man, and then we are off for RodT tomorrow morning at 0900.  Just bad timing, unfortunately.  We'll catch up next time.  Sorry I'm going to miss you this weekend.
