I actually enjoyed two bowls of this last night. The first was in a Missouri Meerschaum corn cob I bought just to have on hand. I packed it using the Frank Method (which I absolutely swear by now, I didn't have to re-light even once!). It had a pleasant taste and a smoked very cool with no tongue bite. The room note was nice, but not as sweet as some aromatics I have tried. I did get some odd tasting bits but I'm going to chalk that up to it being a new corn cob.
After finishing that bowl, I decided to give the Savinelli briar a try to see how it smoked in that. Definitely a different experience. Again, I packed using the Frank Method and it smoked all the way down with the exception of a few bits that got rather moist at the bottom. I'm really starting to love my Briar. It smoked very well and allowed me to experience this blend the way it should. Alan described it best when he said it has the mild taste of pralines. Again, the room note was mild enough not to be intrusive to others. This would be a great blend to smoke if people are around that are not used to the aroma of pipe smoke. My girlfriend allows me to smoke in the house so I don't have to worry about that, but good to keep in mind if we have guests.
I do like the Butternut Burley a lot. It is nice and subtle and leaves very little aftertaste and what is left is not unpleasant at all. I will hold on to this for those times when I just need a mild smoke or for in the car.
