Found that I had a number of single sticks that I've been wanting to smoke, so I picked a few and have begun to put them to the torch. The first to fall was a fresh JL Seleccion No. 2 from FEB05.
Juan Lopez Seleccion No. 2 (FEB05)
This was a very nice looking robusto, with a light tan wrapper. The wrapper showed no major veins and only a couple of minor ones. The seams were flawless on the pre-light, very nicely rolled cigar. The three-flag cap was expertly applied, with very sharp lines between each. The pre-light nose was very mild, but was of sweet earth with hint of hay. The pre-light draw was between firm and easy, just about right.
It lit easily and the draw immediately opened just a touch. Each puff on this Habano rewarded me with generous mouthfuls of thick, rich smoke. The burn was very even, keeping a sharp burn-line throughout the smoke. The ash was a mottled gray color and quite firm, staying on the cigar an inch at a time. The smoke was nice and cool throughout, allowing me to smoke the cigar down to a nub. Great construction on this cigar. Well bunched, nicely applied wrapper...top-notch.
This cigar started with a nice little burst of wood on initial lighting, but quickly settled into a nice creamy profile. Now, the overall feel was similar to a RASS, but the creaminess had a smokiness to it that I found unique. Very nice flavor. How, this cigar was young, very young, and I hit that freshness near the mid-point. It went a little green on me for a few puffs, having a green-wood/vegetal flavor to it. Luckily, that quickly dissapated and was replaced by the smokey creaminess accentuated by some sweet spice. Couldn't quite put my finger on which one, but honestly, closer to Chinese 5-spice than anything else I can come up with. At the end, it settled into a complex mixture of cream/smoke/cedar/spice that was very enjoyable.
I think this cigar is going to be fantastic in 6 months to a year. Yes, I know...I should have waited. Just couldn't do it  . Really wanted to try this smoke. For now, I give an ascending B+. I think this will go to A or A+ status in the near future.
