Stupid ? anyone try these before?
JR Weekly Special: Eighty Percent OFF!
Valid thru Midnight, Wednesday, February 4, 2004, while supplies last.
Yes, 80% off an all-long-filler, handmade premium cigar! And in some cases even more...
How is this possible? Simple - someone really screwed up! Okay, maybe that's a bit harsh, but here is the deal: During the cigar boom, Swedish Match decided to open the first, top-notch, premium cigar factory in Indonesia. The idea was that they, by using the very best local Indonesian leaf paired with lower labor cost, they could create a premium cigar brand (Montague) at half the price to the consumer. So they secured the finest Besuki tobaccos and brought in expert cigar makers from Cuba to train their all-woman workforce. By mid-1998, their 1,110+ person factory was handcrafting millions of high-quality cigars that were retailing for about $4.00 each - which was half the cost of most of the new brands being introduced.
It all sounds ducky, so what went wrong? The first problem was timing; just as Montague was rolling out serious production, the cigar boom ended almost as abruptly as it began. The result was a market glut of cigars, which sent prices down, usurping Swedish Match's cost advantage. Plus, they never really understood the consumer bias against anything made in Indonesia, regardless of whether it was good or not. The end result was millions of cigars and a dead brand.
Fast-forward nearly five years... Swedish Match decided it was time to just cut their losses, and sold their entire remaining inventory to JR for a song. Packed in gorgeous 25-count boxes, this is a mild-to-medium-bodied blend of Indonesian and Brazilian tobaccos offered in either an EMS Besuki, or a dark Mata Fina maduro wrapper. They have a smoky, cedar-like, naturally sweet flavor that is very smooth. As a $4.00 cigar they were okay, but for our weekly special price of JUST $0.80 a cigar, they are GREAT!
This is probably the last big, cigar-boom brand closeout for all you penny-wise cigar smokers out there. And you're really going to be hard-pressed to find a better deal than these Montagues for JUST $20 a box (regardless of size!) anywhere!
