I took advantage of the Xmas specials of 2003 and got a sampler box of six of these things, I believe. Highly recommended by Wascal at first and verified when I tried them later.
I was looking for something to smoke and said, hey why not?
Well another year of age on this beauty (they come aged one year) has made it spectacular.
It's got a dark, deep wrapper and great construction. When I punched it the head flaked a bit but nothing major. Draw was perfect and I lit it up.
I'm not a "hint of cocoa with blueberry undertones and green shamrocks" kind of guy. But I'm trying hard here and I can say that I taste some leather. Not that I've tasted leather. It also has a sweetness to it. The way I would describe the sweetness is you know like in Thai food, where you can taste sweetness as well as spiciness and the taste is really pungent? That's the kind of taste I'm talking about.
Burning straight, a little bit of coning (just means the inside is more moist than the outside), says lit, perfect draw, lots of smoke.
Even better than the RP Vintage Seconds (give em time though), and for under $3 a stick still a terrific deal.
I can enjoy one of these every bit as much as I enjoy an Opus X. I've said it before and I'll say it again: if all I had in my humi were Opus, JR Ultimate Cabinets, and Padron Maduros (and maybe a PAM for special occasions) I would have little reason to want anything more.
Construction: 4.5/5
Burn: 4.5/5
Taste: 5/5
Value: 5/5
