Been here at home playing Mr. Mom and in the back of my mind I am looking for items around the house that would make a nice humidor.

Then it hits me.

Got this big ol plastic jar of Jelly Bellies we got from Costco. Nice wide mouth, about 8 inches high, nice fitting lid.

Would this work as a humidor? Stick a humidifier on the inside of the lid and you got the Jelly Belly Humi.

Once my beads get here I may have to conduct a little experiment.

Anyone else every try one of these? My only fear is that either the lid is not a good enough seal or that the plastic is too thin for the job.

What I have gathered from reading around is that you can damage the foot of the cigar from storing them upright. I would vote a no on this one. But I'm also still a newb around here so don't take my word for it.

My thinking was mainly for bundles and other such everyday smokes.

Would store the "good" stuff in a regular humidor.

I am cheap a tightwad frugal and am always looking for an inexpensive way to do something. :D

1. Make dang sure that it's clean as a whistle on the inside or else you've got tuiti fruiti flavored cigars. I'd try the bleach/baking soda thing you do to take the plastic smell out of a new coolidor.

2. The seal doesn't have to be perfect, but close. I've got a cheapo display humi I got off ebay and it does the job ok, but the humi and temp swings everyday. Nothing crazy but it swings.

3. Keep it in a cool space like a closet, because plastic that thin won't hold temp worth a crap. And keep it away from direct light. Not sure why we do this but I've seen it all over the place too many times to argue.

Keep those in mind and keep bundles in there and you should be fine. I always say this to those folks who freak out when the rh goes over 70% - A cigar is a lot tougher than we give it credit for. RH swings are fine if you actually plan on smoking the stogie within the next 6months. If I planned on keeping a box of opus X for 10 years I'd make sure everything was perfect, but not on a bundled cigar.

Hope this helps.

So You have a humi? If You do, than I think You have to much free time ;)

Well I got an ammo can humi that I made, and I should be getting a freebie 25-30 count humi as a marketing ploy any day now. Then I won a small 10-15 count humi off of Cbid for real cheap on Sunday. That one should be here today or tomorrow.

Was suprised that I won the Cbid humi. I bid low expecting to loose.

I kinda got humidors on the brain right now. :D

Free humi as a marketing ploy? where? when? how?

and about cbid:

CigarBid does not ship outside of the United States.

Damn! I think I read it to often on US cigar shops websites.

I got lucky and a marketing rep paid a visit to my airport blog. Offered me a sampler and a humi for free.

As for shipping, I run into similar things living in Alaska. Some companies will ship via USPS, others only go through UPS. We got to watch how much companies charge for shipping to Alaska. Some are honest and will only chage actual shipping rates, others will charge you triple the rate just because you live in Alaska.

I have even run across a few sellers on Ebay who will ship worldwide, but they will not ship to Alaska! Guess we are living on another planet. :)

Got the Jelly Bellies all eaten, rough job but someone had to do it.

Cleaned out the jar with baking soda and there is no fruity smell at all. Going to experiment with some humidification once my beads get here.

I used a large glass mason jar once. I would add some cedar strips (from old boxes) to help minimize humidity fluctuations.

You could always lay the jar on its side.

Any container that is clean and somewhat airtight can be used as a humidor. Obvious some containers will work better than others but the basic principle is to have a humidity and temperture regulated space with no foreign odors.

Several years ago I met up with a few guys from this board in Dallas at a local waterhole. I cracked up laughing when one guy showed up with his humidor. It was a school kids plastic crayola box..... and it worked like a charm. $1.98 + tax....

I have heard similar things about the Sterilite type ocntainers. They are dirt cheap and some say they are better than coolers because they are not completely air tight and allow ammonia and such to escape.
