Smoked a Cohiba Piramides Limited Edition 2001 stick tonight. Here's a pic I nicked from one of the cigar sites for a visual aid:
As you can see, this is a maduro stick - though in real-life, they were perhaps a bit lighter in color (not much) than the picture above. I pulled one right out of my package before I even cut away all of the packing material (couldn't help myself) - so I imagine these are going to change a bit once I let them rest for even a little while. That being said, these "felt" like they were stored perfectly and shipped fast and didn't seem any worse for wear from the trip (not that I'm skilled enough to tell by feel/smell if the cigar is smokeable - but a little rationalization doesn't hurt anything).
This is my favorite size cigar, a nice healthy torpedo shape. I cut the tip off with my trusty scissors - and went to work. I don't have much in the way of specific description to go with this one - it had a very good taste that I'd refer to as "an honest tobacco" flavor with a sweetness coming from the wrapper and a lot of spiciness. It got creamier as I went, and overall - I really loved it. Probably not as strong or complex as I've been favoring lately - but still plenty of flavor to go around - and very smooth.
Overall, the flavor was not signature Cohiba in my opinion (Cohiba is one of the few brands I think I would recognize in a blind taste-test - and I wouldn't have thought this one was a Cohiba at all). Interestingly, I'm also not sure I would have even pegged this one as an ISOM without knowing it. Actually seemed like the spawn of a Padron '64 and an Upmann #2 to me - with a bit of the Cohiba spiciness in the background. In particular, I felt the maduro wrapper was more "honest" than many others I've had - it was less sugary than many maddies I've had, but still sweet - just not in an overwhelming or cloying sort of way.
Overall: excellent!
Very curious to see how they taste in a couple months - and then over the next few years. This is a cigar I'd recommend to all the Padron fans as one to give a try... Also wondering what all you ISOM nuts think of this one - as it didn't seem like a "pure ISOM" to me. I liked the mixture of tastes myself; but I wonder if it tastes analogous to an "aged steak with catsup" to ISOM purists.
Cheers,
- Oak
