Is this a good Humi for a newbie?

Hey guys,

So I have been in the cigar hobby for awhile, just never had enough or kept around long enough to warrant a humidor. Now, I am finally there :) Anyways, I was looking at this guy from Tampa Humidors http://www.tampahumidor.com/sitedirector/s...89DCC04B3EE6637

Is this a good for a starter? It seems many people on this forum have been a little unhappy with their cabinets but what about the desktops? If I do buy this one, should I use Tampa's starter kit and upgrades (cyrstal humidifier, digital hygro?) or buy this stuff elsewhere. Also, I noticed that many people use the 65% Viper Beads...the starter kit sells 72%, should I still get it or ask for a different kit?

Thanks for the help!

I'm sure it'll be just fine, albeit a little small, but you can always get a bigger one later. Most seem more comfortable around 65%, but that's really up to you.

That is a nice looking humidor. Some will tell you that bigger is better and that you will outgrow this one quickly. However, your budget can limit you on the size. If this is in the budget I see nothing wrong with it . . . if I were in the market for another desk top humi I would seriously consider this one.

Not too bad of a deal for the kit but it is not really necessary. Season the humi yourself (search the CP archives for this) and get yourself some 65% or 70% beads from Heartfelt you will not be sorry . . . best non-cigar purchase I ever made.

Good luck.

Seems like a nice box. I like to looks of it. I think in general people have been happy with the vendor. If you are wondering about humidification, I'd probably invest it in some Viper beads or a Puck from Cigarmony. Much, much easier.

ok so sounds like I will go with the viper beads without the starter kit...should I still get the rectagular crystal humidifier? Maybe buy the one from heartfelt just to have or ditch it completely?

The container you want for your beads is subjective really, some say the mesh bags work a little better but that’s not to say the humidifier cased version doesn’t work well. As far as the stock humidifier, id ditch it.

Just ditch the foam out of the stock one and fill it with beads.

okay...are tampa humidors and/or heartfelt on this forum? Can I get a discount if I mention I found them on CP?

Just my .02 but I would spend the same amount of money and make a coolidor and get kitty litter or beads.

My reasoning:

When I started with cigars I bought a similar humidor, although back then it cost $200 for one like that, and soon I owned four of them and "had" to go to the coolidor for shear volume. The problem is that with a humi that size, when you get a few cigars of different make up, you have to keep them apart so they don't marry (marriage ends badly in most cases) so you can literally only keep 20 sticks in there.

You can buy a 3 - 3.5 cubic ft. marine cooler at a wholesale club like Sam's Club for $50 - $60 and some beads or kitty litter and have space for many boxes or partial boxes. I bought some spanish cedar at the local lumber mill for $15 and built shelves and it has been awesome ever since.

Hope this helps

That's really quite debatable, and most don't believe that flavors marry unless you're speaking of "flavored" cigars, in which case they should be kept in a separate humidor all together.

I hope I didn't mis-speak. I have always been told that dis-similar cigars that are allowed to touch will, in time, marry.

Welcome to CP!

I highly recommend Viper's 65 beads (go 70 if you are Arizona but 65 probably everywhere else). I also use his tubes which work perfectly for me in my 125ct desktop humi. You should go bigger and eventually you may want to look into a coolerdor but it's unrealistic to expect new people to cigars to actually start out with that. In one of my small humidors I use the cheap plastic container that held the cheap foam, but I question whether this will hold enough beads. I use two 2 ounce tubes for my 125ct humi but you may want to get 3 just in case you are having trouble maintaining humidity for whatever reason. As long as your humidity is between 60-70, you should be fine.

Viper is currently offering a discount of 10% on all orders >$75 at http://www.heartfeltindustries.com/

I also recommend the Z-plus Insert and palio cutter (also offered from heartfelt) if you have the money right now. I recommend posting an introduction and filling out your profile to properly get introduce and welcomed to this community. If interested in purchasing some cigars at a great deal, check out the NEWBIE TRADE THREAD HERE.

Finally, regarding the marrying of flavors...if you keep the cellophane on most of your sticks, there's nothing to worry about. My cigars that do not have cellophane generally come from a specific region, so I'm not to worried. I also try keep my unwrapped cigars apart but generally I wouldn't worry - just be sensible about it. It's a hobby, so it's best not to freak out if your humidity drops to 58 or your Nicaraguan maduro is near your Dominican candela.

Well that's the most I've ever said in any post outside of a review. Welcome!

Many many years ago I was going to buy this one but decided it was to small. Who would have known I would have been right. Just keep that in mind when you buy a humidor as you will probably upgrade it pretty fast.

We are, unbeknown to us, providing a very powerful insight into life!

People, like cigars, if allowed to touch will, in time, marry. The difference is cigars, unlike people, if and when they marry, can never be seperated.

People should be more like cigars!
