Is it cretinous to use a pocket knife?

I've tried a couple different cigar cutters. They all have displeased me. I just use a razor sharp pocket knife, or my thumb nail.

As long as its razor sharp why not.

And how long are your finger-nails? ???

I think there are some die-hards out there that actually still use their teeth.

I guess I would, too, if nothing else was available. I have used my knife on several occasions. Works pretty well, actually. :whistling:

Not at all!

I have stopped using my Zino Davidoff, mostly because it has gotten dulled over the years. Now I hold the stick in my mouth for a minute or so to lightly dampen the wrapper near the head. Then I whip out my Benchmade Mini-RSK (Doug Ritter Survival Knife, based on the Mini-Griptilian) and cut the wrapper, then binder, then the bunch. Works perfectly and lets me work the bundle a bit if it looks tight.

ginseng - your post caused me to have visions of john rambo in the woods preparing a cigar to smoke. Hey, if that works for you, that's all that's important. However, none of these methods are me, espcially when you have a cutter that works (much easier and consistent results).

There is a reason I have one very long and sharp thumbnail. I'm never without a way of decapitating a stogie. :p

I prefer a punch or V-cut, cos I tend to prefer a tighter draw then most.

As far as whether it's cretinous, in my book not if it works.

Some people, however, are horrified when they gift a nice stick to someone and they bite it off with their teeth.

I can't do that cos I wear braces.

I had to use my knife once. It was a gorgeous day and I got all situated to smoke and realised I forgot my punch...so I had to use the trusty pocket knife. Works well if you have a nice sharp knife.

I use mine on a regular basis. Whenever I'm stuck late at work I usually don't have cutters or my punch, so out comes the trusty pocket knife.

I use a pocketknife quite often. I don't like carrying a cutter in my pocket and thus frequently forget it.

But then again, I am poor white trash... (and proud of it!)

Hehe,

When I'm feeling like Rambo, out comes the Cold Steel Recon Tanto. And that's my small fixed blade. ;)

You do raise a good point about ease and consistency though. My response is that we each define a ritual that supports and adds to the experience. Gettin' intimate with the steel and the leaf is my routine and it helps me focus on the experience to come...necessarily so, and precisely because a slip due to inattention can render skin or wrapper into a sad state.

Gary,
I always learn something from talking to you. :p When caught without a knife, a quick prying off of the cap usually does the trick.

I say whatever you've got, as long as your don't mangle your cigar.
I've been known to push a few holes in the cap with a toothpick when a decent blade is nowhere to be found.

And I've used a golf tee on more than one occasion.
