Interesting RH situation

I just salt tested my hygro as I thought the readings were strange when I turned it on in my house. It salt tested as reading 3% low, so it isn't grossly out of calibration. I set it in my fridgidor with the 65% heartfelt beads. Check in a couple of hours later and it is about 73%. I look at the beads, and they are almost completely clear (probably 95 %), so I'm drying those in the oven as I type this. Anyway, I left the hygro on my desk for a few hours to discover that the RH in my house is 66%! Does that mean I could just put the cigars in a box and leave them on my desk? This may not be all that unusual considering that the outdoor RH here is about 98%. Any of you guys encounter this situation?

Thanks,
D

It's not entirely impossible. In New Orleans they have to use DE-humidifiers to maintain humidity for cigars. I would keep the beads 25% saturated that way they can absorb excess humidity and give off a little if needed.

My basement works the same way DK. In the summertime, I can leave my humi open and it holds a solid 64%.

It's during this time that I spend more time regulating the overall RH% of the basement with my Dehumidifier than I do with my humidifiers in my humidors.

What an amazing contrast to where I live here in AZ. The realitive humidity outside drops into single digits often in June and early July. It's a battle to keep the humidity at 40% inside our home.

I guess my concern would be consistancy. Will your house stay in a 3-4 % fluctuation range?

I love and cherish those days that the RH in my home is 60 to 65%. I can play with and fondle my cigars at will. This drives my wife nuts.

Doc.
