Iguana Cigars - Need opinion

I've had the candela "Baby" and the "Papa" both, very early in my cigar experiences. I liked them at the time, after some time in the humi (they came wet) they had a decent construction, good burn. The flavor was sweet and mild, not a strong smoke. I remember the experience, but not alot about the smoke itself. That may be because on the ride home that day I was in a four car crash when an Okinawan fell asleep at the wheel and hit me at a stop light doing almost 70kph.

Not sure how I would react now, after I've broadened my palate, but I did like them then. I think they were the fourth cigar I tried, or something, almost 2 years ago.

My experience is simiilar to Treamayne's. I've still got a bunch of the candela baby's if you want to try them Rod. Shoot me your addy if you do. I'm just looking for an excuse to get rid of them :D

I've smoked about three boxes worth of the stuff and it's my view that they are a very good cigar. They produce a lot of smoke, construction is flawless, no wrapper or burn issues, and they have some great flavor. The problem is this-the maduros get a bad reputation due to the candelas. I can't speak about the other Thompson line of cigars, since I haven't had any. About a thousand people will post here about how horrible the candelas are but you shouldnt' let that influence you on buying the maduros. As a matter of fact, when I was new to cigars, I was going to order the candelas, and just ordered the maduros simply because of the fact that they were out of candelas....completely sold out. Turns out that it was a good thing, because the Iguana maduros are just excellent!. Randyb1 and I did a box-split on them due to the fact that we like them so much. I may not be the greatest cigar authority, but Randy has excellent taste(check out the cigar list in his pass if you don't believe me) Get the Maduro robusto version for $37.00 Rod, it's simply a steal.

I smoked one of these not that long ago and it was a really nice smoke. Something I wouldn't mind having in my humi. i thought about picking up a box next time I go to my inlaws and read the thompson mag.

Very great affordable smoke. I tihnk thompson finally had a decent smoke..LOL!!

I picked up a box of the Candela robustos.. NIce looking cigar..tons os smoke..very mild flavors.. but overall decent smoking yard-gar..

Like Scott said , "God how I hate to agree with Scott :whistling: " The Madd. are a very good cigar, great construction , great draw, tons of smoke, and a pretty decent flavor . For the price , cant go wrong. If you want to try a few I think I'v got a few in the humi. yet let me know ;)

I've heard this a lot from many people. Once again, I haven't had any others like the Amoroso or Belmondo that they push a lot in their magazine. They do have a Thompson's reserve that they claim has been aged and is a heck of a good maduro. A box of those runs about $65.00. I've been curious as to how those taste, but given their reputation by word of mouth, I figure they're trying to sucker people with what looks like a super-premium cigar, but in all reality, tastes like a gas station stogie. :p

I did some checking, and it turns out that I do have a few Iguana candelas as well. I traded for a few of them last summer. I haven't tried any of them yet, I just like to look at them as oddities. You know, like collecting Elvis nose hairs, dental floss used by serial killers, or underwear of dead rock stars. Haven't torched one yet, but I might have to just for the heck of it.

I've got one Iguana candela in the humi that I have yet to try.

Unfortunately, this is a Thompson's product so I'm not getting my hopes up :(

Take Randy's advice on the maddie Rod. He's the pickiest bastard I know when it comes to cigars. You should hear him and gibu critique some fine smokes that the rest of us covet. They smoke Patel's, Fuentes, and other fine cigars and then dismiss them as dog rockets.

Thanks guys, I went ahead and ordered the Maduro's. I read a lot of good things about it on other sites as well, so this should be interesting. Thanks for all the feedback!

The Maduros are pretty good sticks, as has been mentioned. The candelas, tho... blech. If you want a good Candela, Greycliff Emerald or 858 Candela.

You won't be disappointed Rod, they are gooooooooood.

The 858 candela...I have one of those. Anyone else try one? ??? ??? ???

858 is a aurtero fluente right? sorry probably misspelled that. I just found a dealer out by me that carries alot of these sticks along with the short stories. And can't wait to light up a short story this could easily become an everyday cigar for the price.

Well, Rod...

If you want to trade or sell off a 3 or 5 pack from the box, I'd be interested in trying a couple. As I said - had the Candela but never the maduro.

-K-

Gotta post a review Rod, I'm curious to know what you think about 'em. The first box I had was grand, lots of smoke and everything else that I mentioned previously. The second box I bought was probably when they sped up production or something, they were a tad bit off, though the last box I bought was outstanding. I've heard that it's wise to buy in bulk since quality and quantity of a given smoke may fluctuate from time to time, in particular when it comes to maduros. Hope you enjoy!.

As I understand it, Aurtero and Arturo kept fighting over the cigar supplies and so he decided to branch out. They let Aurtero have all the candela leaves and the rest is cigar history.
