Idea for a humidor

I had an idea for a humidor that I didn't end up going with... but I figured I'd put it out there for any of you who are considering having a custom humidor made.

Cabinet humidors with glass that allows you to see into the humidor are nice; you can glance at your cigars without opening up the door. The problem is that light isn't all that great for cigars.

What I was thinking about was using some of that funky Piezoelectric glass. Depending on the current that is passed through it, it is either a mirror, or with a flick of the switch, it is see-through.

If you used this for the door of your cabinet humidor, you could have the best of both worlds. When you want to see your cigars, hit the switch, and you can peer in. Other times, it is left as a nice looking cabinet with a mirror on the front of it... and your cigars are protected from light.

If someone ends up doing this... take some pictures of the result, I want to see it! :)

Sounds awefully expensive!!! Plus, i like to peek inside my humidor...looking through a pane of glass just isnt the same. :whistling:

Sure, but the more often you do that, the more strain you put on the humidification system to keep the proper humidity in the humidor.

Yah, but you also don't get that wonderful smell of cigars and spanish ceder...

If you are worried about light. When I was a picture framer, we would offer UV resistent glass for customers that had limited edition pictures. That could be something to look into.

Useful, fucntional, but lacks geek-cred :p

...or, how about rear coated reflective glass, that would appear reflective but would be more or less transparant when the lights inside the humi came on...?? Think of "one way mirrors".....

Just thinking out loud - B.B.S.

I think that were on to something yall. moki, Ive seen that stuff before but that seems like one hell of an idear to me. I wonder how much that sutff runs in at? I mean for an end table humi or something that glass doesnt have ot be that big.

I've been working out the plans for a built in humidor lately and have been looking into door options. I want glass to see the cigars but I do want the best environment for the cigars. I like the idea of the Piezoelectric glass and I like the idea of a one way mirror. Time to look a little closer into both of these options.

Thanks for the ideas guys

I'm thinking it would be nice on the top of a cabinet. Nice mirror surface that would look nice with an ornamental OpusX ashtray on it, and then when you want to show off your goodies to your friends you wow them with a flick of a hidden switch to make it see through. Show off your Opus and Padron collection while getting your Geek on!

That sounds cool and all, but is light really that big of a deal? Maybe for the random singles you have, but if you have cigar boxes in the humidor? I'm guessing direct sunlight can't be too good, but what does it matter if a little incandescent or fluorescent light gets in?

I believe this is called electrochromic glass if anyone is looking for it.
