I am a wood worker with a contract to build a large humidor for the cigar room in a restaurant. The piece will be 9' high and 12' wide. have a glass front display case with cigars for sale, and 48 locked drawers that will be rented to the restaurant's clients to keep their private stash. There will be many challenges in engineering this unit, including adequate humidification, air circulation, and sealing the many openings. I have some Ideas about the solutions to these issues, but not enough experience to feel confident that they will result in a successful piece. I would like to talk to someone who has had experience designing and or building a piece like this... anybody out there?

This community prefers people become an active part of the community by posting an introduction in the Introductions Forum. This helps maintain a tight sense of community and a little familiarity with new users. I know its like meeting the parents on a first date but thats just how this place runs.

Turn down the job. Seriously. If you don't think you can do a successful job then you should probably not do it. Let someone else who has done it before do it. No need to ruin whatever reputation you've built for yourself for one small piece like this.

You could always talk to the other guy who is only here for humidor engineering tips. I'd tell you to search, but I have a feeling I'd be wasting my breath.

First, welcome to CP. Please introduce yourself in the new comers area so we can get to know you a bit. 2nd, I've never taken on such a large project but the first thing I would do is familirize yourself with Sketchup. http://sketchup.google.com/download/ This program will allow you to design a 3-D image of your project and make a materials list. best part is, Sketchup 7 is free and there are tons of tutorials. You don't need the pro version.
Another thing, you will also have difficulty finding material in sheet goods over 8 feet long. You will also need a LOT of materials. I'm building a cabinet that only about 40 cubic feet and I've already cut up almost 100 bf of Spanish Cedar. You may also consider going to a place with a similar set up and see if they will let you look it over. Good luck. Let me know if I can be of any help.
