They are Coleman 28 qt Coolers that sell for 9.43 at my local Wal-Mart. The first one was blue, now he's got a red twin.

I find the top fits very snugly and with an appropriate humidification system they have no problem keeping my sticks nice and moist, even in the driest of winters.

Not too exciting I know when I have probably a couple dozen sticks IN my humidor that are worth more than the humidor itself, but the performance is exactly what I need. And my philosopy is function>>form.

Lumby,
Can you give a newbie some details about how you equiped the inside of the cooler. Do you have shelves? Any spanish cedar? Etc.. do you use beads?
I have run out of space in my two desktops and just ordered a bunch of sticks from cigardawg; so, I need to expand my storage and this seems to be the cheapest way to do it until I can afford a big standup unit.

Here's how I "equipped" the coolerdors: (Pay close attention because it's a fairly complicated process to ready these for proper cigar storage)

1) Wiped out insides with cloth
2) Placed cigars, humidification element, and digital hygrometer inside
3) Closed lid

I hope you're able to follow.

:)

Incidentally, there are others who do more fancy things with their coolerdors, and have posted pics. I believe Arlin Liss even posted a nice picumentary on how to make a coolerdor really nice. And he's the man when it comes to nice humis.

You'll find more information here.

...sounds like the exact cooler I have; I've got the red one....:D

LouieD - I scored some unvarnished cedar boxes from the local cigar store and my gars get put in those, then put those in the cooler with a hygrometer and 1/2 a pound of 65% beads. No worries...

Oh yeah I do have a few odd pieces of cedar in amongst the boxes and baggies too. i think another member won a lot on CBid of some irregular pieces and sent me a few as part of a trade. Also somteimes a piece of cedar is used as a placeholder in a box of an odd lot of cigars, whatever of those I've accumulated are in there too.

...one other point is that before the cooler got filled up ( ) I used rolled up bubble wrap to take up some internal volume. Didn't see the need to humidify area that didn't have gars in it....

Oh, and how's this for a Monday AM faux pas; I ran upstairs after my first post and my Coleman is blue....not red... :whistling:

...more coffee required...:D

Cheers - B.B.S.

The most important thing is that a) we have something in common and b) when you do get another one get the other color.

Lumby,
Thanks for your detailed instructions. I have reread them several times and I think I might be able to handle this :D .
I like BBS's idea to use the old cedar boxes. I'll have to give a couple of the local stores a call.

Ok, good. Just remember to save the beer until after you've finished the preparation, or you may find yourself wiping down the cigars and then placing them on top of the tightly closed coolerdor!
