Anyone like me out there, not use a hygrometer?
I just never bought one and my sticks have
been in very good condition. I just do the
pinch test.

Honestly, I didn't want to stress over the RH every
time I looked at it.

By the way, I use beads (65%) for my tupperdor and crystal gels
for my 100 ct humidor (some stick have been in there for over 3 years).

Hygros are cheap, accurate, and good insurance. If you choose to run without one, it's your choice.

To each his own. Beads are pretty solid so I'm not surprised you are getting good results with them. I have hygros in my cabinet at different levels but maybe I'm more curious than some.

Whatever works - B.B.S.

I have hygros in my wine-o-dor at different levels as well. I notice the very bottom where my beads are runs at 71%. My first shelf runs 69% and my top shelf runs a 61%. The temps on the bottom is 67 degrees and at the top 70 degrees.

So I'm experimenting with the same sticks at different rh.

I like them, plus they tell me when something is out of wack.

Me too! Sometimes I think of it as overkill, but at least I know the RH throughout my cabinet!

Personally... I am in denial...
(No, not the river in Egypt...but that is not important right now.)
My hygrometer is always reading different than I want it to, so it is easier just not to believe it. Seriously, maybe my kids are opening my humidor multiple times a day (very plausible), maybe I just keep adding cigars to the humi which continuously alters the humidity (possible), maybe my “jank” just ain’t working (hmmm, could be), or maybe it is my fault (highly improbable). FYI- I am using the right size heartfelt beads for my 150 cigar humi.

Either way, I have a hygrometer. I look at it from time to time… and it is like watching an Agatha Christie, made for TV movie… you never know what is going to happen.

I just do the pinch test.

Perfectly exceptable for someone that has experience with cigars and storing daily smokes. Most that have been in the hobby can tell from feel if a cigar is to wet or dry. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone planning long term storage (aging) nor a newb to the hobby.

Although i'll confess having a Honeywell remote weather station keeping constant track of the humidity at 2 key points in my cabinet, it's very rare that i check it. I got out of the habit of checking humidity after switching from foam to beads in my coolers a couple years ago. My smokes age well, feel and smoke the way they should and that works for me. Between the Moist-N-Aire in the bottom of the cabinet and about 3 lbs of beads on the upper 3 shelves i think i'm in good shape for the long haul.

I pretty much agree with ya nana, beads are almost foolproof.

I use beads and el cheapo hygros and if I see the hygros move lower, it's time to add water. I'm lucky though, my basement (where I have my coolerdors) stays between 55 and 65% year round so I haven't added water to my beads in the past year and a half.

Kenny' right though, I wouldn't recommend this to someone who's new to cigars though or like he said, for someone who is into long-term storage.

I haven't used one in years. I can tell my RH by looking at the beads well enough.

50-70% one-day swings in ambient RH are common here. I didn't have to add water to my beads all summer because my house is cooled by an evaporative cooler. In the winter, I have to add water about once a week. I could manage by looking at my beads, but my hygros provide a sense of comfort that I've come to require. I do because I can.

I use a hydro in both of my humis, the cooler I have here in Iraq, and in the 150 ct at home in TX. I walked my wife through the testing and setting process for the hydro over the phone, it has read 63% steady for the last 2 months. The hydro here in Iraq is plus/minus 2% depending on the temp, and I have not added water in almost 3 weeks. I like my hydros, I am not sure I could give them up, but I do not obsess over them.
