Following some of your recommendations, I bought a HygroSet Hygrometer along with a Boveda 75% Calibration Kit. Received it on Wednesday and put it in the Boveda bag and sealed it tight late Wednesday afternoon. The Boveda instructions say to leave it in there 24 to 36 hours. Well, it's now been almost 38 hours and the humidity reads 69 degrees...or 6 degrees lower than it should be. The room temperature has been between 69 and 71 degrees, so that's been ok. The hygrometer instructions says it was calibrated at the factory.

It's hard to believe it would be off this much if it was calibrated at the factory. Should I leave it in the bag longer and see what happens, or should I trust that is is 6 degrees off and adjust it up to 75%? Your advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

If the hygrometer is adjustable, then adjust it to 75%.... If it is not adjustable then just make a mental note of the difference.

Make life easier on yourself..... go to www.cigarmony.com and buy some beads from Mark. They come with there own mesh bag.

I would leave it in for a few days just to be sure and then adjust it to 75

I should write this in more detail, but here is the short version. Quality is relative. What I sometimes visualize when I read "calibrated" at the factory, is a line of grannies with tweakers, fine tuning to a set value. That happens in aerospace, and medical devices, but not in the Wal Mart, sub $50 devices. In reality, the FTC should ding them all, because they aren't calibrated at all. Rather, the GOOD guys will pull 1 in 100 devices and test it. If it lands +/- 5%, its good and that sample group will be passed. THAT is what they call calibration.

The solid state devices that almost all digitals use pretty good and reliably behave well in a good range of humidity. However, the devices used to support them are not. The rest of the components used are frequently the cheapest that can be found. A resistor that is supposed to be 100 ohm can vary by as much as 40%. That resistor is where we get screwed. The non-adjustable devices have that POS +/- 30% resistor developing the voltage used by the sensor to rendor a % value. If it is off, so will the value be. The adjustable devices will have a variable resistor developing the voltage. If its off, you tweak it until it's where you want it.

If you truely run into a calibrated device (and I use calibration loosely), you should expect to pay $100 or more for it. I don't own an adjustable device. I have a couple of Wal Mart specials. I tested them using the salt method, marked the deviation on the front, and only use them now to tell me when its time to recharge my beads. Like Bkcloud says, get the beads, either from Mark ad Cigarmony or from Viper at heartfeltindustries.com.
