I purchased the round adjustable hygrometer from heartfelt and received it yesterday in the mail. Excited as this is my first hygrometer, I attempted to salt test right away overnight. All seemed well before I went to sleep, but when I woke up, the readings were showing -- for temp and -- for humidity. Yesterday when I removed the plastic battery strip and all seemed to be well, it gave me a room temp reading of 25C and humidity of approximately 58. I've tried to fiddle with the buttons, but considering that there are only 2 buttons and one knob I couldn't find the solution. I've also tried removing the battery in hopes of resetting the hygrometer, but it simply shows --, --. Please help... :(

I bought two round ones and received them yesterday . If you read the directions it clearly states to use Boveda Calibration kit to calibrate your Hygrometer/s. I'm at a loss as to why you salt tested instead of the aforementioned calibration? The Hygro are 23.00 ea. and the Boveda is 4.95..

They are very simple to use. The directions are the red button (1) changes from C to F the (3)knob lowers or raises the reading and (2) sets the reading.. This is from memory, I may have made a mistake as to the numbers on each function.
I recommend you email Viper and explain what happened.

shouldn't I be able to calibrate any and all hygrometers with the salt test?

Yes you can, you just eliminate the human variable with the kit (IOW - remove the possibility of making an easy mistake).

I've heard of some digitals getting messed up in the salt test; hopefully yours just needs a reset of somekind.

If even the slightest bit of salt and or saltwater ended up inside your meter, it may never work right again..
If you have a lot of digital meters to test the $4.97 isn't a large investment concidering.
Did it reset for you? (fingers crossed)

Take the plastic, printed numbers off the display.

Made you look! LOL

I tried to reset by removing the battery for 10 min or so. I definitely did not get any salt or water into the hygrometer. All was going well for about 3 hours before it started to give me weird readings. Sadness consumes me. :(

Don't get depressed over this. David is a stand up vendor, and its only 23.00.. Its a new product, I'm sure you'll have no problem replacing it..
It takes David a few days to reply to PMs and email don't read anything into it.. He has lots of products and people wanting his time, just be patient.

I responded to your email but will do it here as well. If you still are having issues with it I will send a new one with a return envelope to send the old one back to me. I would like to look at it and see what happened if I can figure it out.

One thing, I do not recommend using the salt test method on ANY digital hygrometer. The electronics inside really don't like salt and most manufacturers of hygrometers recommend against the salt test. I don't know if this is what happened but I will see if that is it.

Let me knwo and I will get the repalcement out.

PS, my junk mail filter caught your email but that should not happen again.

David

Thanks viper for all your help :D

how do you recommend calibrating electronic hygrometers?...seems most people on this forum use the salt method with most of their hygrometers

Hey there.

I have posted an introduction already, but I will try to better fill in my profile. In a nut shell, my job sits me in front of a computer for a good amount of time so I surf the web alot :)

I recommend the Boveda Calibration Pack. It is the safest for electronics by far.
