OK... I just received my new humidor today and I opend the bag and box that the analog hydrometer came in. I notced that my fingers stuck to it as it has sticky stuff all over the back.... it was like vasoline or oil but sticky. Anyone have any ideas what this is and why it is there? Should I use some goo gone and remove it so it does not contaminate my smokes?

Thanks.

It's called a hygrometer, not hydrometer.

The back is most likely 'sticky' so that you can adhere it to the inside lid of your humidor. Analog hygrometers are known to perform poorly - consider purchasing a quality digital hygrometer.

I have one of them as well... anyway... I had to install this one as it goes in the front of the humidor. If I left it out, there would be a huge hole there. :0

Shiba,
What is the make of your humidor? I have one that sounds similiar to this one

So, from the sounds of it, its NOT some sort of adhesive to stick it to the humidor.

I can tell you this from my most recent experiences that analog Hygrometers aren't as accurate and reliable as digital. Anecdotally speaking of course, I have in use 3 digital hygrometers:

Don Salvadore
Cszonka (spelling massacred)
Little havana

As per the salt test information posted at this forum, I performed said test last night. When I woke this morning, the Csonka was 77% and the Don Salvadore was spot on with 75%. I'll wait to do the Little Havana, but I trust that is spot on too.

Not to hijack this post in any way, but I think you'll find that your digital hygrometer is the best approach.

That is similar to mine but the hygrometer is a little smaller.

Anyway, I am aware that the digital ones are better but that is not my concern. My concern is that whatever this substance is, I am fearful that it will contaminate everything.

I've never dealt with anything like that, but just off the top of my head, maybe it was some type of silicone grease or something to seal off the edges around the hygrometer when you install it so that you aren't losing humidity. Just a thought, but honestly I'm not sure. Let me know if you figure out what it is. Maybe you could call the company.

i would NOT use the silicone ADHESIVE while you have smokes in the humidor, the stuff gives off a terribly strong order for a short period of time and may actually seap into the spainsh cedar and cigars. if you do use this, give it a feew days in a cool, well ventelated area to dispurse the order.

I am not sure what it was but I took some goo gone and wiped it all off and then wip the smell and residue off with some distilled water until I no longer had any residue or citrus smell from the goo gone left. Then I put it back in... That was the best thing I could think of to do. Any thoughts on this?
