Hydra fans

I have had my Hydra with 2 fans for about a month now and it is working great. The problem I am having is I used the Velcro tape to mount the fans and it does not produce enough space between the wall of the humidor to produce enough airflow.

If I take the fan off the wall and hold it away from the wall it pushes a pretty good amount of airflow. I went with the velcro because I did not want to put holes in the spanish cedar. I am now thinking I may have to do this and I was thinking about either getting some small screws or nails and using some 1" spacers to create a space between the wall of the humidor and the fan and increasing the amount of air being put out by the fans.

Questions are how fragile is spanish cedar? Will it split from having a small screw or nail put into it about 1/8 of a inch?

Has anyone else mounted these small Hydra fans to the walls of your humidors and if so what method did you use? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mount the spacers (fully threaded) to a sheet of rigid plastic. I.e., Fan, Spacers, Plastic, Countersinking the plastic for a flathead screw. Mount the
velcro to the screw head side of the plastic. Determine the shortest screws and the length of the spacers. Try McMaster Carr OR Grainger, etc for the spacers/stand offs. If you need a sketch, let me know and I'll email it to you.

edit to add: I suppose luan or thin moisture resistant plywood could work in lieu of the plastic. Use aluminum or CRES (stainless) spacers, and CRES screws if possible.

You didnt mention what type of humi you have.

I have a Staebell Mini and mounted my fan to the back of the shelf so it hangs down.

I have a Hydra and know the fans that come (I have those too) with it have holes for mounting on each carner. You could do this easily. I rewired my to use a larger computer fan, but the same process applies.

This is the exact humi I have

With the Hydra fans the holes are not in the right places for me to hang it from a shelf if I did it would be flat and I would have the same problem I am having now. I am just trying to find a way to create some space for better airflow.

Maybe I am missing something, but why not use cedar spacers and glue them to humi. Then place velcro on blocks. I know you can pick up cedar blocks at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Anyway, just a thought.

Funny you mention that I had a old cigar box and cut 2 small squares the size of the 2 fans and I mounted the fans to that with the screws and spacers and did velco that to the walls and damn what a difference. The extra 1.5 inches I got has greatly increased the air output. Thanks for all the replies everyone.

Sorry I do not have a digital camera but what i did was I had a empty Monte #4 box and I cut 2 squares 2" x 2". I then placed the screws through the holes in the Hyrda fans and then placed a 1" spacer on each of the screws. I then screwed the fans with the spacers already on into the 2 square pieces of wood I cut, making sure the screw did not come out the other side.

At this point I just put velcro tape on the other side of the squares and had the other half of the velcro on the walls of the humidors and that was it. My airflow has improved greatly very low tech and cheap 8 thin screws and a package of double sided velco tape.
