Humidor problem, hygrometer problem and/or do I have bugs?!

OK, take a look at the photos and tell me what you think is going on. I think it may be a combination of things. Most of the damage is my cigars unraveling. I keep them at 65% because I like them there for smoking because they burn a little better than at 70%. So, is my hygro off and it's really way too dry and thus the unraveling? I just put another digital hygro in there to compare the two. I haven't salt tested. But the thing that really scares me is that hole in the Davidoff. And look at the 2 piles of "dust" that look very similar to termite droppings. I zoomed in on them. It sure looks like crap to me... but I have found no dead bugs and no other holes or signs of worms or beatles in any of the other cigars. Just all of this unraveling...

I've had this humidor up and running for a couple of years now and never had this problem...

Here this is easier... click here: http://picasaweb.google.com/cleman7/Cigars

#1 - SALT TEST YOUR HYGROS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How often are the cigars handled? How consistent is your temp/humidity? When you pinch the cigars, do they feel supple or do the wrappers feel brittle? Do the intact cigars unravel/split while smoking? How do they smoke? Really hot and acrid(too dry)? or burn real slowly, and hard to keep lit(too wet)? etc.

The Davidoff really looks like beetle chomping to me. There are no other signs though, at least in the photos, which is fishy.....The rest look really dried out to my eye, or like they've have been thrown across the room or sat on. ??? I think maybe some more experienced members may have seen this before and have more insight. Answer these questions and you may get a better idea of your issue.

Follow Billys advice and search this room for other threads on solat Testing.

They look very dry.

However that Davidoff does look like it is being chomped.

Aslo a couple of pics looks like the remants of beetle damaage. The 'specks' of tobacco on the bottom of the humi.

Usually pieces from dry smokes are not that fine.

Good Luck.

Dont be afraid to ask for help......

First thing I would do is to place all my cigars into their own baggie to help stop the spread of Beatles.
next, set up a temp storage for the cigars, tuppy or cooler would be the cheapest way to go
then, clean and re-season the humi - search for many threads on how to do this.
while all that is going on, salt test your hydros - again search will be helpful

also check to make sure that your humi still seals.

Good Luck
Tim

Wow....those poor smokes look dryer than an Arizona desert in summer. Can't be sure about beetles or not. But, the advice you're getting is sound. Bag 'em to contain any beetles you may have, and throw them in a cooler with some decent hydration until you can figure out what's going on.

Probably no hope for the ones with the split and busted up wrappers; my condolances there, to be sure.

Good Luck - B.B.S.

Looks like those A-Hole commie beetles took a dump in your stash with no respect for your feelings.... SO if I were you I'd freeze and store every shipment I got to show them bastard@@$% who is boss................. DAMN I HATE ME SOME COMMIE BEETLES, I am in the process of freezing every single piece I get except the one's I expect to smoke within a couple of days.................. show them A-Holes who's boss.

OK... cigars are handled at a minimum... only when I'm picking one out to smoke... not sure about the consistency, but I've got a really nice humi with an excellent seal. Humidity usually reads around 63-65. Had it like this for a couple years and this never happened before. Pinching them they feel dry... I haven't smoked one out of this humi since this happened... want to them recover a bit first... Thanks for the feedback.

do I pull all of them out of this humidor and bag/ tupperdor them and I guess then freeze 'em? Or do just pull out the ones on the bottom (where the davidoff and the bug shit were)? Again, thanks for all of the responses...

Me personally... I am a little paranoid and since being on this forum for a couple weeks and hearing of all these horror stories of these beetles I freeze everything just to be safe..... if it don't hurt then em' then do it. You can never do too much to protect your investment.

Edit: Spelling...... Like always.
