I did some searching around, not quite sure what the solution is.

A really good friend of mine, whom I got into cigars, has an issue with his humidor. He lives out in Cali where the conditions are a bit different then MN, so Im not quite sure how to help him out. In fact, I think he's been lurking here a little bit... I told him to post on here his question and he should get more then enough help. Just figured I'd beat him to the punch.

He can explain the situation more, as I don't know all the details. Sounds like he found a wet spot in his humi, with the start of mold. As well as some mold on just one of his cigars. What does he need to do to sterilize/restablize that humi, and does he need to toss the stick. Im pretty sure it's not plume, as he mentioned little hairs.

Fire away.

hi
First is he using a hygrometer? If he is then is it tested? What color is the mold? Sounds like to much humidity in the humi......

Just wipe the mold off the cigar and smoke it. From a scientific perspective, you're not going to be able to get all of the mold off (without destroying the wrapper), so putting that cigar back into the humi is just re-introducing the mold. If he wants to be sure about the humi, then as long as he can do it quickly, I don't see the harm in emptying it, cleaning it out real good and starting over.

And get some beads in there! They'll absorb that excess moisture that can cause mold!

He's got beads in there, I made sure when he got the humi. In fact, when he called at the time he noticed the issue, his RH was below 60%

Where in Cali does he live? I would think if he's in SanFran or a coastal town mold and high humidity might be a problem, but if he's inland, it's essentially desert and he'll have the same humidity problems as we do in the winter.

Either the beads weren't preped correctly and were too wet when installed or he needs to dry them out and start again. A UV light is great for killing mold if you can find one.

Calibrate your meter! After that, if the RH is still too high, the seal is probably bad. Or as a last resort use a dehumidifier. I live in South Florida and have a dehumidifier in the apartment set for %70. Works wonders for over humidification.

Turns out, he was using a syringe to add water to the sponge, while it was in the humi. Some water missed and sat on the bottom, creating the mold
