Humidor issues?

I'm going to try and make a long story short. I ended up buying an imperfect humidor, seasoned it for 2 weeks. I added 2 xikar gel jars, a freshly calibrated xikar hygrometer, and it held at 70%. During the very first cold snap the RH dove to 55% and stayed. I put the cigars in my vino, re-calibrated the hygrometer, reseasoned the humidor. Again, when the weather got really cold it dove to 55% and stayed there.

I did some research on the board and ran a bead of sailmaker's wax around the edge, seasoned it again and damn if it didn't drop to 55% yet again. So I said screw it and placed it in the bottom of my vino hoping that would help the RH come up a little. After 4 days of resting in the bottom of the Vino (which is currently at 69% RH), the hygrometer in the humidor still reads 55%. (now I'm really confused)

Am I missing something, or is it just time to retire this humidor?

Did you crack the door to the humi open when you put it in the Vino? Assuming that you did and one hygro is reading 69% and the other is reading 55% in virtually the same conditions I would say its a pretty safe bet that its a defective hygro.

You know what, no I didn't think to pop the lid of the humidor. Let me do that and see where we end up.

Thanks Kyle.

Yeah, I don't have any experience with putting a humi in the vino, but I would assume that if a good seal prevents humidity from leaking out of the humi it would also prevent humidity from entering the humi if it's closed. Give it a shot and if it doesn't help we can troubleshoot from there

X2! Salt test it for accuracy.

My thought process was if it leaks out then it will accept humidity as well. I have it propped open now and will check when I get home

The hygrometer was set using a boveda calibration bag the 2nd and 3rd time.
