Hi Gang,
I just joined and i did a search but found nothing.

I'm currently turning my basement into a man cave and i plan on having a nice sized humidor in there (like the kind you see at conveinience stores) and I was wondering is there going to be any kind of effect for it being kept in an enviroment that has a dehumidifier in it?

my dehumidifier runs only a couple months a year but i wanted to know if i should turn up the humidifyer setting in the humidor during those months or will it be un-affected?

Thanks gang, and I'll try to post picks of the man cave in progress (im doing it all myself so its gonna take a while)

Is it mold in the basement?

What is the humidity set at on the dehumidifier?

I would say yes it will have an affect on the humidity in the humidor but not very much. It will depend on how good the seal is on your humidor. If the seal is good, then the only time the dehumidifier will have an impact is when the humidor is open. If the humidor has a bad seal, then it may lose humidity a lot faster.

Just keep an eye on the humidity levels in the first few weeks that the dehumidifier is running and adjust as needed. Eventually you'll see what type of setting you will need to maintain the proper 65%-72%.

BTW: I hope your man cave also includes a full wet bar, gigantic TV, and stripper pole as well as the humidor.

there was mold till i took care of the problem with the dehumidifier and fixed all leaks (bought the house in may)

I havent purchased the Humidor yet. as of now I just have 2 boxes that hold 50 and 75 cigars.

i'm still shopping around for what will fit and be a good quality but doesnt cost hundreds of dollars

Thank you,

and yes i plan on having a flat screen down there and a full bar, don't know about the stripper pole though, i got some ugly friends. lol

Before you plan on getting the big display humidor (though they are nice!) you may want to think about just getting a big cooler and making a coolidor I have my cooler in my basement with the dehumidifier running 24/7 and it doesnt affect my humidity levels in the cooler at all (or at least not to a noticible degree. It would be a shame for you to spend all that money and be struggling constantly with RH levels.

Just something to think about!

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see why there would even be a concern about this. The dehumidifier that is running in my basement changes the RH of the room to whatever it is set at gradually over time. It's not like there are wild RH swings where it goes from 80% to 30% in a short time frame. What is you dehumidifier set at?

Obviously I wouldn't want to store cigars in a room with too high of an RH because of mold concerns (i.e., it's easier to add RH to your humidor in a dry room that it is to get rid of it in a moist room).

I guess what I'm trying to say is I don't see why storing cigars in a room with a dehumidifier would be any different from storing cigars in somebodies air conditioned living room in Arizona.

If you question is should you be concerned about the RH of the room fluctuating as the dehumidifier cycles on and off, I think the answer is no because as I stated above it should be gradual enough that your humidor doesn't even notice the difference.

Your problem will most likely not be too low of humidity, you will humidify your humidor at a constant level. But if your basement is too wet, your humidor will be subjected to the same high humidity that caused your mold problem. You will need to incorporate some beads or crystals to lower your RH in those situations. Mold is your enemy!

my dehumidifier is set to 50 %

mold is not a factor anymore. its dry, and smells like a normal room and all areas that had problems are now dry and still clean.

So if the RH is 50% and the room is dry and smells like a normal room then I guess I'm not really seeing any problems ... unless I'm missing something. ???

Are you concerned your cigars would dry out too fast or be too moist?

yes, i was affraid it would be counter productive. like if i had 10 people constantly opening my humidor for cigars during a football game. would the dehumidifier dry out thos cigars too fast for the humidors humidifier to take care of it?

bottom line is i didnt want to ruin a bunch of cigars so i want to know the procautions i need to keep them drying out on me during heavy use

Opening and closing frequently during a game or while having people over will drop your humidity a little but not enough to really affect your sticks negatively. Were you to just open it and leave it that way then it might. Long as you keep it closed between removal of sticks you'll be ok. Think of it the same way as someone walking into a B&M and selecting a stick from the display. Now imagine how many times that is opened and closed in a single day.

In any case I still recommend the cooler cause they work so well but seeing as those display humis look so damn cool, you should be all set if you are intent on getting one. Someone else with a cabinet might be able to confirm or deny this but I'm pretty sure the only precaution you need to worry about is not leaving the door open for hours or days at a time.

Also, make sure you abide by the simple rules of grammar and such (using the shift key, etc.) We're an educated bunch here and like our threads to reflect that!

Good luck with your Man Cave! Post up some pictures when its all set.

Shift key? and the spell checker requires a download and i do all my forum surfing at work so downloading non work related program is frowned upon and requires a code. I just want to relax and smoke cigars. not worry about my spelling :)

I'll post pics as i go.
Thank you everyone for the help. I think the coolidor would be a conversation starter

Then you shouldn't be surfing from work then! We really take this seriously!

Using proper grammar is one of the rules here. Nobody expects perfection, but showing you can type like an adult is preferred.
