Is there anywhere I can find a guide for frequently asked questions of what to look for in a starter humidor? Basically if you're not a big cigar smoker and just want to store a few cigars in good condition in a relatively inexpensive humidor.

Any links?

cheaphumidors.com

cigarbid.com

These should get you started. But you have been warned..These so called starter humis may seem like all you need and you say that now that this is all I need but oh how that will change very quickly. Next post from you will be as follows: and I quote...

"Looking for Bigger humidor, My starter humi I bought last month is just not big enough! Please someone help with a larger size humidor"... :)

Good luck and may you be right in your decision.

:D

bargainhumidors.com has a pretty nice 500 ct. humidor for $150. You will probably want to take the advice offered and get a bigger humidor bigger than you feel like you need. I bought a 150 ct. about a month ago and I am out of room. You can feel it up quick with your newbie samplers and trades. Not to mention people at this forum like to blow up mailboxes........

how long should the humidor be left open when giving it some fresh air?

a minute or two. Or usually the time it takes to look inside to pick one to smoke

Why does one need to air out their humidor?

Fresh air is needed to prevent mold... but opening it to grab a smoke is usually more than enough.

Cigar tobacco "breathes". Cigars consume oxygen and emit gases into the surrounding air. For this reason, it is important that humidors are regularly aerated in order to provide the cigars with fresh oxygen. Humidors should close so well that a constant level of internal humidity can be maintained. However, a hermetic seal is neither necessary nor desirable.

If the humidor is not opened for longer periods the necessary oxygen level can be maintained by placing a match under the lid of the humidor. Afterwards one should verify that the humidor is able to maintain a constant level of humidity.

Maybe it is just me, but temperature and humidity level has always stymied mold for me. ???

So I've taken a look at some humidors in stores and I've seen the sponge that supposed to get wet and go inside the credo to keep the humidity.

A couple of questions:

1. How much are you supposed to wet that sponge? Every box I've seen doesn't have any instructions as if I'm supposed to intuatively know exactly how much water to wet the sponge with.

2. Do you need to use distilled water or will regular water do?

Use only distilled water. Regular water has inpurities that could harm the cigars. Also, best bet is to get a premixed solution of distilled water and Propylene Glycol this will allow you to regulate humidity so the cigars don't get too moist, check out this. Another thing you might want to consider is ditching the credo that comes with it and getting a tube of beads from viper. I use this and will never go back to a credo. Hope this helps and enjoy! BTW, I agree with all above, buy something bigger then you think you need now.
