Humidor Confusion

Hello everyone, I just purchased my first humidor and 25 new cigars. I am having problems getting the humidity to be constant in my humidor however. I followed the directions on how to prep and season the humidor but often come to find that the humidity is at 80%.
Interesingly, when I take the cigars out of the humidor and test the humidity in the empty humidor it goes down to about 69%. AND when i test the cigars alone in a ziploc bag, they are at about the same. When i put the two together though, I end up with 80%. What is going on?

Hello and welcome to CP! First things first. You may want to go post an introduction in the Introduce Yourself Here section. Tell us about yourself and such.

What are you using to measure the RH?

Indeed... what they just asked!

I have found there are some hygros that are terribly inaccurate...

BTW... Welcome to CP! :D

Well, its a cheap setup, an analog hygrometer and more or less a sponge type humidifier, it is what came with it in a combo from Thompson.

Multiple problems IMO.

Get a digital hygometer, the inexpensive analogs cannot be relied upon at all.

Get some beads from someone and replace the sponge with 65% beads.

And last, but not least, stay away from Thompson! They sell more lousy house brand smokes than anyone!! :p (IMHO)

x2

Also make sure you keep the temperature 70 degrees or less.

Calibrate your Hygrometer.
Learn to "pinch" your cigars to see if o.k.
Oh, and Calibrate your Hygrometer.
If you get a digital, Calibrate it as well.

You have to play around with it. But buy some type of beads or gel. Find your local B&M and ask them for help too. One of them by me really helped out and now my humi is stable.

Stay away from Thompson too they tend to badger you once you buy from them and then stop. Try using Holt's or Tinderbox. That is just my two cents.

Also remember that those cigars from thompsons are probably wet. If they feel spongy to the touch, then they are overhumidified, which will cause your humidity to shoot up pretty high in such a small humidor. Let them dry out a bit outside of the humidor if thats the case, then place them inside after they dry for an hour or so.
