Humidity Question

I acquired a media bead tubos from Joe.M and a few cigars to boot. Its a 70% tubos(the large one) coupled with a radio shack digital hygrometer. I only have 3 cigars in the tupperdor at this current time but the hygrometer reads 74%. the hygrometer was salt tested to +2%. Is the 72% too high or is the amount of cigars too low? Or should i get a new hygrometer?

p.s. Happy Thanksgiving

The humidity level is up to 75%. Ive tried putting strips of cedar in, but they just suck all the humidity out. What can i do? HELP

Hiya,

I have had the same experiences with my coolidor, until recently. If I remember correctly, the beads either release moisture, or attract moisture, until the surrounding RH is, in your case, 70%. I have read that having a fully stocked container will help to keep the humidity stable, but my opinion is that with beads, or a PG/distilled water Credo, as long as your container is air tight, the RH should stablize regardless of the how many cigars you have. However, cigars are also hygroscopic, IIRC, so if the cigars that you have in the tupperdor are all wet and mushy, they will RELEASE moisture into the air, and, depending on how wet/dry the beads are, the beads may not be able to soak that extra moisture, and the RH won't be able to drop down to the target 70%.
In my case, I kept on opening the damn coolidor to take in the sights and smells, so the atmosphere in the cooler never had a time to equalize. Also, I just threw in a bunch of cigars from JRCigar which must have been dry as a bone. Once I stopped opening the thing every hour, and let the cigars soak up whatever moisture they needed, the RH has settled dead on to 70% for the last 3 days...I am keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way.
So, although I am no expert, and I am sure the real experts will chime in soon, I would guess that the beads have been recently recharged, and your cigar's moisture content is significantly higher than the 70% RH you are shooting for in the tupperdor. Sadly, I have no idea how you would dry out the cigars, if that is indeed the problem.

WHEW!!! I am a windbag or what!!??! :p

Ya might have too much water in the beads. Try drying it out a little with a wiar dryer.

Personally, I prefer the 65% beads ;)

Was wondering that myself, but didn't want to ask  :0

I've exhausted my brain searching for this supposive wiar drier. Neither target or walmart has this item. I guess I will keep looking around. :p

The first time I got my beads (65%), I overfilled them and the humidity shot up to around 80% :0

I got out my wife's hair dryer and got them all dried out and only put in about 3ccs of distilled water and everything evened out in about 2 days. It's been rock solid at 65-66% RH ever since.

Never heard of a wiar dryer, though. You might just want to try a hair dryer. ;)

Holy crap :0 And I wasn't even drunk :p

Buncha real comedians here, hardy har har........

I've added to much water to my beads a few times in the past and the humidity shot up to 75% - 80%. When you recharge them, they usually need very little water.

How long does it take to dry out the beads with a hairdryer?

sorry about the double post. The tupperdor is holding at 63%ish, with about 30 cigars(all came in the mail). What can i do to get the humidity up?

It should only take about 15 minutes or so. I didn't get mine too wet to begin with.

Like CC said, it doesn't take much to recharge. I only put a couple of ccs in every couple of months.

I use a REALLY small syringe - i got it at the vet to force medicine down one of my cat's throat and kept it because I thought it would work for the beads. You could probably use one that you get for diabetic/insulin purposes.

Damn! I missed this one! :p

[as I wipe the tears from my eyes] I make a motion to the Board of Directors at CP that CC be removed as the official "CP English Police" ;)

Those in favor say aye. :0

These folks have given you some pretty solid advice. I tend to add either too much water, or too little myself. I've let the beads sit out to dry up a little bit before when the humidity was too high. If you want to speed up the process, I think fifteen minutes(as posted before) with the hair dryer on low/medium ought to do it. You can find some basic information here, though if you use the CP search engine, you can find other sources as well. How are things looking now?? :)

Its been sitting at 65% for the last couple of days. Im going to see if there is any change and plan accordingly(add/subtract water). It being a 70% tubos, there is still a long way to go.

If the humidity stays at 65% for a few days with out moving, should I add 1ml of water or so to get it up to the 70% that the tubos should maintain?

65-70 is very exceptable. If you like a easier draw then stick around 65. A humidor at 70 plus you can tell the difference in draw. I guess it depends on your personal choice of what you want.

Is there anyway to manipulate the 70% tubos to keep it below the value of what its intended?
